I didn't like much besides 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol', the last poem of the book.

A true story, originally published as a series of 'zines, about subbing as a special ed assistant in Portland Public Schools. Dave is a young aimless punk who is getting just a bit too old for his series of meaningless jobs, but doesn't have the skills, experience, direction, or interest for anything more solid. When he starts subbing, his world view is both strongly reinforced and radically changed.

I read this novella in one sitting: a delicious father vs. daughter vs. neer-do-well suitor drama. My favorite James.

One of my all-time favorite books - it's smart, profane, funny and a bit dirty, all while taking on the Big Subjects (faith, love, sex, art, class and all that other good stuff). To steal an idea from one of the blurbs on the back cover, this book is like the bastard child of P.G. Wodehouse and Richard Dawkins.

When I read this book, I could not put it down! It is about a girl who is engaged to her high school sweetheart. She is having second thoughts about their relationship when he is paralyzed from the neck down. Now she has to decide if she wants to stay with him because of how others will look at her, or if she wants to move on. Compelling reading!

I've just started it, but I did read the introduction--or at least a bit of it, before the intro decided to give a detailed summary of the book. I decided I'll just jump right in. Edit: The intro to this story seemed to give the entire plot, which was a bit disappointing. Honestly, if I wrote a book, it would be like this. It went straight from event to event, with little description or embellishment--simply the facts with a few lines of wit thrown in. While I liked it and was amused by it, it's easy to see how times have changed. The book wouldn't be a best-seller these days, being as short as it was and with so little descriptiveness. In all, a fun, quick story, but it left me frustrated oftentimes just wanting more details. It reminded me of a rough draft that someone never got around to filling out.

This was a fun quick read. It reminded me a lot of Shannon Hale's books.

The main character gets every woman he sleeps with pregnant. This is his story of how each of his children came to be. I enjoy this guy's writing. It's very poetic at times. A "manly" look at things. . . I wonder if it's truthful.

Our 21st century Kennedy assassination, with the added horror that thousands died instead of just one. The most amazing thing about the history of 9/11 as we know it today is that the terrorists were not using box cutters. They were using real guns and knives, because that's how easy it was to smuggle super-dangerous things onto planes at that time. The whole box cutter thing was a PR cover-up by the airlines. Rough reading, but pretty hard to be an American without it.
Since my Robin Hood show (BBC) is between seasons, I thought I'd try a book to get my Robin Hood fix. I had the hardest time getting into this book, and it all felt very vague. Personally, I felt as though Robin was a minor character throughout the story. I liked Little John's character, but there wasn't much else that stuck out. The romance between Robin Hood and Marian seemed off somehow too. I guess that I expected a lot more from this, but was disappointed.
