I give it 3 stars instead of two because of the fabulous subject matter and idea - what a great way to learn about the channel islands! However I found tc boyle's writing self-aggrandizing and his characters unbelievable. TC boyle's vocabulary is incredible! However I don't think a research scientist would be as wordy as he is. And I think any good animal advocate would carry reusable grocery bags and take all manner of environmental lifestyle actions. The antagonist's revelation at the end made him seem shallow and unthinking, which I don't think he really was.

This is the beyond adorable story of a sock and a mitten who have lost their pairs. They set out to help each other find their missing half. Together, they deal with such troubles as shrinking and becoming undone! The pair finally realize that they can be a pair together. LOVE IT!

Very different from traditional vampire books. Vampires exist and are known to exist only by the people of this one little town. Once you leave the town, people don't know about the vampires. That is, if they let you leave town. Though different, it was very surprising with many unexpected plot twists. There were a few instances where the rules were somewhat baffling and didn't seem too well constructed, but a pretty good book if read with an open mind.

Neither John Green nor David Levithan's writing styles have really grabbed me in the past, and this was no exception. It was a fun read but I didn't find myself particularly caring about any of the characters. I have heard it gets better on subsequent readings, though, so I may give it another try in several months.

2.5 stars http://threedollarbillreviews.com/201... A young woman arrives at castle on the night of Queen Gloriana's Winter Feast. The queen is celebrating her victory over her rival, Queen Catherine of Echosea, and the traveler is invited to feast with them. She offers to lead Gloriana to the location of Queen Catherine and what's left of the army, in exchange for Gloriana allowing Catherine to surrender. What Gloriana doesn't know is that the young woman is Queen Catherine in disguise, attempting to lure the rival queen into a trap. The one that actually gets trapped is Catherine, and the women who were destined to be at odds with one another find a shared passion. Glory and the Clever Cat is a well written story about two women from opposite sides of a long-standing rivalry. It requires an element of suspension of disbelief to accept all the events that happen within the story, especially that Catherine passes so easily for a boy and that Gloriana accepts Catherine so quickly into her bed. At the core this story focuses on two women who are meant to be against one another finding out they share something in common. I liked that through the story there are times when Catherine learns that her preconceived notions about Gloriana are not necessarily true. There is quite a bit of comparison between how the two women rule, and each is effective in their own way, but it is their differences that are most intriguing. The ending comes to a resolution very quickly, with a happy ending tacked on that felt rushed and sudden. I think the story would have better with more detail added in, which could have made the ending more solid. As the story is told from Catherine's point of view, her characterization is stronger than Gloriana, who is portrayed as a larger than life figure. Overall this is a decent and quick historical tale that is enjoyable but could have benefited from a bit more development.
Collected Stone Arch Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Hanseland Gretel, Red Riding Hood and Rumplestilskin. Straight tellings of the fairy tales, most of the art is moody Tim Burton-ish. They are fun to read and look at, but necessarily violent. Two page text about the origin of the tale at the end of each story.

Loved this book, set in Southern California. I read it because I saw the 2007 movie "There Will Be Blood", which turns out to have been heavily adapted for the screen. I liked the book better. It is very critical of big business and of fundamentalist religion (specifically the Foursquare Church of the 1920's. There's a fake preacher who goes through a scandal very reminiscent of Aimee Semple MacPherson.) This book is hard to find unfortunately. It's a gem.

My Review: If you are an animal lover then you would love to read all about Maggie’s Second Chance a gentle dog’s rescue. This is a true story about the important of responsibility shown by fourth grade students who read about how Maggie was going to be euthanized. The children were determined to go to the city council and convinced the members to set up a shelter that would house animals that would not be killed but can stay in the shelter till they are adopted. This is a sad story with a happy ending. Sad because pets like Maggie are the casualty of foreclosures who are often left indoors, without food, water or the comforts of a temperature controlled environment. We should remember that pets are living and breathing creature incapable of fending for itself and that when you get a pet you are responsible for fending for that pet. What a great illustration by Joe Hyatt who was able to show the true expression of Maggie. FTC Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion in any way.
