While the sections on semiotics and narrative theory are simply explained and illuminating, be wary of past editions as their current topics will include movies like Lethal Weapon and Desperately Seeking Susan. I've heard the newest edition has been updated with more recent movies, which sounds very appealing.

This is a World Book Day book, containing a single short story of about 60 pages in length. The story primarily feature Mulch Diggums but Artemis and Holly are involved. It's a pleasant enough amusing diversion but offers nothing that the Artemis Fowl novels don't. Since you won't find it except second hand or via an internet search I would suggest it is for die-hard Fowl fans only.

Title: The House on Mango Street Author: Sandra Cisneros Pages: 128 Publisher: April 3rd 1991 by Vintage (first published 1984) ISBN: 0679734775 (ISBN13: 9780679734772) Written in a maximum of two pages per chapter, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros was claimed to be an “Internationallally” poetic friction. The House on Mango Street tells a collection of short stories by a Mexican girl named Esperanza. Esperanza and her family live on Mango Street. She expresses herself in poetic paragraphs about her witnesses on the poverty of Mango Street, a diverse community. From my point of view, I see that The House on Mango Street is a very biased book. It is written from a Mexican immigrant girl’s point of view where Esperanza gets to explore her community and neighborhood. Esperanza reflects herself on the poverty of Mango Street along with her own cultural background, her family, and friends in Mango Street. For example, she describes herself as “a smart cookie” because of where she comes from, and her social class. Towards the end of the book, she describes herself with “shame is a bad thing, you know. It keeps you down. You want to know why I quit school? Because I didn’t have nice clothes. No clothes, but I had brains.” (page 91). Ironically, this book reminds me of the peace prized novel I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala by Menchu Rigoberta, an Indian woman who spoke out about the struggles of her community. I see that both books has a tie on the theme poverty, and the parallel struggles in living in poverty. Two novels are similar because both are written from a female’s perspective. Rigoberta’s novel could have been a fiction because she is partially being biased about half of the things she wrote, which in a more serious perspective, she does not deserve the peace award because she lied. I see that the author of The House of Mango Street is very similar to the perspective in which Menchu Rigoberta tells her story in India. Overall, I do not have a favourite part of this book because I think this book is biased yet it is a good book to read. At the beginning, it will take some time for readers to get to know all the readers. However, the book is very poetic. I recommend this book to any age from middle school and up, or as a purpose to compare this book to I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala by Menchu Rigoberta.

Wow. Der stärkste Fünfzehnjährige der Welt, ein Mann, der mit Katzen reden kann. Katzenmordende und zuhälterische Werbefiguren. Ein Bild, ein Lied, eine Junge, das_der Kafka am Strand heißt. Murakami schafft es, Romane zu schreiben, für die es keine Gernebezeichung gibt. Das literarische Äquivalent zu einem einzigen, langen, surrealen Traum. Clemens meinte, wenn ich das Ende verstehen würde, sollte ich ihm unbedingt Bescheid geben, aber es lässt mich genauso ratlos zurück wie wohl die meisten anderen Menschen auch. Wahrscheinlich würde ein tieferer Einblick in die japanische Mythologie und Kultur helfen, mehr von der Symbolik zu verstehen. Vielleicht aber auch überhaupt nicht. Um noch einen hinkenden Vergleich zu machen: Murakamis Bücher sind wie Einstürzenden Neubauten-Lieder. Fesselndes Buch.

In retrospect, this is probably not all that great a book. It is somewhat melodramatic and over-wrought, and the main character tends toward the whiny. However, when I was 12, it was AWESOME. Possibly because when I was 12 I tended to be melodramatic, over-wrought, and rather whiny...much like many other young teenage girls.
