Nothing particularly profound or new here, but it's a good, compelling read nonetheless.

I've been debating what to rate this book. I did appreciate a great deal of it, although I wasn't entirely satisfied with the ending (perhaps it's part of a larger story that continues in another book). It's an engaging adventure story. I really liked the banter between Harp and Boult. In fact, the author created some great characters. Also, her description of the jungle and all its inhabitants painted a vivid picture of a place I'd never want to visit but liked experiencing from a safe distance. Yet, I couldn't always stay fully engaged with the story. The reason...poor copy editing. The book is filled with typos. Now, I'm not a horrible stickler about typos. Almost every book contains a few because even editors are human. However, there is a difference between one or two typos in an entire book and one or two typos every five pages or so. There were so many that it kept taking me out of the story...and that's not good. I've noticed this problem with a great deal of WOTC's published books. Perhaps, someone is relying too heavily on spell check? As a reader it makes me feel like the publisher didn't care enough to strive for more than mediocrity and that's kind of insulting (for the reader and the writer). So, it's a pretty great adventure. In fact, I'd give the story itself about three to four stars. The lazy editing, however, is what brought the rating down. I'm just tired of it.

A solid collection of stories make up the 25th annual version of this anthology. Highlights include Kenneth Calhoun's NIGHTBLOOMING Aaron Gwyn's DRIVE, and Megan Mayhew Bergman's THE COW THAT MILKED HERSELF. I read this more than five years after they were first published, but unlike some Best Of collections, all of these stories sit in a Southern state of timelessness that is well worth your attention today.

I can't say I really liked this book very much. I didn't care to any great extent about any of the characters. There didn't seem to be any point to it, except to give examples of racial and sexual issues and problems of the time. Because of that, I always felt like I was reading a treatise on race and sex in America. I'm sure James Baldwin is a great writer, and in various parts that was very apparent. But, overall, it just seemed somewhat lacking in plot and character development.
Out of this book, i read A Good Man is Hard to Find and Everything that Rises Must Converge. I like A Good Man is Hard to Find because the plot was interesting and it had a lot of irony. I didn't like the second story much.

Page 182 - not impressed yet. I have been a Jean Auel fan since the first book, Clan of the Bear Cave. I have enjoyed all five of the original books and was very excited to have won an advance copy through Good Reads. But so far, I am disappointed. The first 50 pages are full of introductions of a myriad of characters from the various lodges - along with long and often repeated personal introductions that they go through. There were so many introductions I had to create a cheat sheet to keep all the people and cave numbers straight. The story picks up a little after that but there is much repetition. Even the story line is slow. And did I say there is a lot of repetition. I am about one-third through the book and already I am weary of the phrase "friend of the horses, Whinney, Racer, and Gray, and the four-legged hunter, Wolf". Ms. Auel also repeats more than once the daily habits of the Zelandoni. There are also repetitions regarding hunts and mating ceremonies and first rites. Does Ms.Auel think her readers have Alzheimers and need constant reminders about the ceremonies and rites of passage? There is a lot of description of the countryside - which I always skim as it covers several pages and adds nothing to the story. I would suggest that you buy this book only if you already own the first five and have a burning desire to complete your set. I am so glad I won a copy through Good Reads. I have the first five but I will not be buying this one. I can't wait to finish it and move on to a more captivating story. I just hope I run across some more interesting plots before reaching the end of the 800 page tome. The second and third sections of the book finally have a bit of a story. However, the entire book is still so full of repetitions that it was a laborious read. You figure out pretty early on what Ayla's "calling" will be and what Ayla's big contribution to society will be. The romantic triangles and family interactions are straight textbook romance writing. No real surprises or new revelations in this volume. I'm glad I read it but I'm also glad it's the last one. I don't think I could force myself to read another.

I have loved this series since the first book, but I found this to be the absolute best in the series (so far!). If you have not started this series, I highly recommend it to everyone. The world building, characters, plot are all fantastic. I am not going to be able to review the first 3 books in the series here, but please read them first. Do not start the series at book 4, you will miss too much. The series is set in London. The main character, Genny is Sidhe Fae, but since her mother was Fae and her father was a vampire, she cannot perform magic herself. She can however "crack" magic, hence the name of her company, spellcrackers.com. Whenever magic is performed in the committance of a crime, she is usually called in to help track the criminal. Most of this book revolves around a kidnapping, and the fact that the fae of London's fertility has been trapped for a number of years in an amulet. Genny is trying to help release the fertility from the amulet, which takes her on a tarot card quest. What I really loved about this story was that while Genny and the people in her life, have varying magical abilities, and histories which she is slowly learning about, and while misunderstandings sometimes ensue, they are all played out very realistically (albeit magically) and she really stands up for herself, and what she wants out of life. She does not run off half-cocked when those she loves are in danger (which always annoys me in other books, when it is done to drag out a storyline). And she doesn't let misunderstandings simmer to her detriment. I cannot wait for the next one in the series!
