My friends Ian and Steve warned me about this book, and Ehrenreich's demeanor in describing her experiences. And while I don't know that I feel as strongly against the point-of-view with which she wrote the book as they did, I didn't really appreciate her perspective on things. I think the experiences she journaled and the power of the depair she communicated were effective, at the end of it all, she still had an out to those experiences and that despair. But, then, as a 30-something professional making a decent salary, am I much in the position to judge? Granted, the first 25 or so years of my life were spent toiling in many of the same industries in which she chronicled her life, but I finally dug my head out of my ass and started focusing on working on what I wanted out of life - to not flip burgers, bus tables, clean carpets, huck Target carts, and scan paper. So, to that end, I certainly appreciated what Ehrenreich put forth in the book.

Heroic...good if you like WW II survival stories.

I love survival stories in which a small group of trapped people have to figure out what to do to make it through emergency after emergency, using their often limited skills and their wits and their ability to cooperate. Scotty and six classmates find themselves in just such a situation when they become trapped in their high school under 18 feet of snow. Power failure, water shut off, roof collapse. . . the situation becomes more and more dire. This is not great literature; the characters aren't even particularly well-developed. But it was a great little thrilling read.

Love John Steinbeck's style, lyrically told, beautifully descriptive, a simple but stunning story.

The most realistic & scary dystopic novel I've ever read; even though it's marketed for young adults, I think everybody should read it.

I almost gave up on this book. The first half was incredibly long and a bit dull. The foundation for the story was laid but I think it was a little too long. I almost stopped listening to this book and I would have had it not been that I love Kingsolver's writing style. All in all this is a great story a good amount of history and fiction. Harrison Sheppard is a unique character and I love that he loves everything there is about life. Having been raised by an extremely shallow Mexican mother whose main worry in life is wearing the latest fashions and finding a man to take care of her. He spends a few years with his father or should I say in the same state as his father, Virginia, at a boarding school. Later in life Harrison is unjustly labelled a communist after having spent years working for them. You should read or listen to this book. Hopefully you won't find the beginning as droll as I did. I guess the Lacuna for me was between the first half and the second.

I don't think I will ever read this book because it is long and I am lazy.

Shouldn't really mark it as luminous without reading it, but it is my expectation, along with all else that's checked..
