Not a favorite. I did finish it mainly to know what happened but found the ending anticlimatic. The up and down relationship between the 2 main characters drove me crazy which is ironic because isn't that what these romance novels are all about?

I saw the movie late one night when I was 15. It was one of my first exposures to boobs on the screen, and probably ruined me for life by associating female nudity with rape. Added onto this was the ultraviolence, which holds a serious mysticism for teen boys, so it left a very memorable impression. Reading the book a few years later, I discovered that the movie was VERY faithful to the book, with the exception of an extra chapter at the end (which was left out of the film). You could save time and watch the movie with this one.

There were a few times that I found people's actions a bit reaching, I enjoyed it overall. The story addresses several important social issues.

Story of ex-pats in a Turkish coastal village in the 6o's. Their self absorption and nonchalance when their actions wreak havoc and cause the ruination of the yet discovered paradise is heart breaking and rings so true with what is happening globally today. This is not an easy read but it is beautifully written and the characters will haunt you long after you have finished reading.

This is the sixth book in the Shadows of the Apt series, really the second novel in the current arc, as the first four novels are a complete series in its own right. This novel is different to the other novels in that it has only one major POV character, Stenwald Maker. Every other novel has had multiple main characters carrying the novel, the first four multiple disparate strands while book 5 was more focused. This really will shape how you enjoy the novel, if you particularly liked Maker's strands in the previous books then you'll love the book. If you don't like the character you won't. The novel starts with Maker trying to protect the city of Collegium, and the entire Lowlands, from a variety of threats. From the familiar, the empire to the east and a few new exotic threats. To go into any deeper description would spoil the surprises but it's certainly more complex than in previous novels. Then a couple of hundred pages in the novel takes a complete left turn and changes tone completely. Again I won't go any further to avoid spoilers but suffice to say it surprised me, which happens very rarely in epic fantasy. I continue to get more impressed by Tchaikovsky with every book by him that I read. His prose continues to develop as does his skill at characterisation. His first novel was rather formulaic and predictable but he's improved allot since then, writing innovative and surprising plots. His remarkable Kindred system, which made his books stand out in the first place, continues to develop. All in all the world Tchaikovsky has built grows in depth with every novel and in my view this is the best novel he has released yet. I look forward to book 7.

Just when I think Smith has backed himself into a corner and nothing more exciting or dangerous can happen to Alex, I'm proven otherwise! Constant with the first three books, this keeps up the fast-paced gory action that is Escape from Furnace! I had no idea where the story would be going once the trio escaped or what could possibly happen next. Obviously no happily ever after, but it was nothing I expected! Twisted and disturbing in a whole new way. I enjoyed every minute of this read.

a little too colloquial for my taste...more of a women's empowerment anthology than a piece of academic writing.

There were some interesting tidbits regarding the history and use of olive oil. Recipes are always fun, too. The author, however, seems to believe that olive oil is the cure all for disease and skin blemishes. If you have a form of Cancer, Diabetes, or Disease X, you must take the ideas in the meaning of good will. Yes, olive oil is a better choice than butter, but it won't cure cardiovascular disease. Cal is not a doctor. It's like the Windex approach in the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The Mediterranean diet is great for your health and skin. It is not however, a substitute for a doctor. If you understand that this is a good/fun book in regards to History and the cultural importance of Olive Oil, you'll enjoy it. If you want "healing powers," you'll mock the author's silliness.
