This sent genuine chills down my spine when reading at night. I'm still musing over the ending; it is shockingly clear and the story masterfully builds up to it. I tend to dislike this kind of endings, but in this case it fits inevitably. Not at all in the narrative style I expected, it was a pleasant surprise.

The darkest, bleakest humor you can imagine is featured here along with sometimes very cutesy and sometimes horrifying drawings. The Tickle-Me Hellmo was particulary side-splitting/soul-tainting.

Wie bei den beiden Vorgängern aus der David Hunter Reihe bin ich nach der Lektüre gespalten. Simon Beckett schreibt sehr spannend, und ich bin jedesmal in einem Sog weiter zu lesen, aber irgendwie bin ich am Ende immer enttäuscht. Die Täter sind immer Personen, die bis zum Ende als liebenswürdig dargestellt werden. Bei keinem anderen Autor fühle ich mich so offensichtlich dazu manipuliert jemanden zu mögen oder zu verabscheuen.(Letztere zum Zweck der Verwirrung, der Leser soll ein paar Leute so unangenehm finden, dass er ihnen die Taten ohne weiteres zutraut. Und das nicht etwas subtil, sondern sehr plakativ und groschenroman-artig.) Der Aufbau und Spannungsverlauf (inklusive "überraschenden" Wendungen entsprechen 1:1 den beiden Vorgängern der Reihe. Ich wollte ja eigentlich den dritten Teil gar nicht mehr lesen, habe mich aber doch verführen lassen und bereue es trotz der Kritik nicht mirklich. Ich wurde gut unterhalten und bin dieses mal sogar im Dunkeln getappt, was den Mörder angeht. Mein Hauptverdächtiger war dann doch unschuldig.

I wasn't crazy about this book--there wasn't one character that I liked. But, I did think the overarching themes of trying to communicate in dysfunctional families was worthwhile and ultimately, made the book worth finishing.
