The premise is very interesting...a clash between the old world gods and their counterparts in the west who have been forgotten as society has modernized. The description of the way gods and people are in this world -- that people can see only the stage, but gods see everything, stage, backstage, etc.-- I found to be poetic and one of the best analogies out there. But I felt that with such an amazing premise, the book just didn't deliver to it's potential. In fact, I felt the ending was a bit anti-climactic. A good read for those who like to philosophize.

I just finished rereading this and was struck by how little of the book I remembered. I fell utterly in love with the story again and look forward to rereading Trickster's Queen without having to wait a year in between. 3/1/04 Review: The newest book in the author's Tortall world, this one focusing on the teenage daughter of the main character of her first series in this world. It was a bit odd to see characters you first met as teenagers to now be middle-aged but it was still very interesting to see how they have changed over the years. I have a special place in my heart for Tamora Pierce and not just because I loved her books when I was younger. It's because she is one of the few YA authors who I have not outgrown. I have outgrown so many favorites over the past five years that it is nice to know that there is still at least one or two authors I can still read with enjoyment. Aly is a likable character who is perfectly her parents' daughter. The book is an entertaining and a quick read. I loved to be able to see the culture of other parts of her world besides Tortall, one reason why I loved her earlier book Emperor Mage. Though at times, it seems like she was just name dropping in order to appease her fans who want to know what happened to so-and-so from that book, the annoyance factor was fairly easy to ignore. Because of that name-dropping, however, I would not recommend this book to those who have not read her three earlier Tortall series. For those who are already fans of her books, I heartily recommend it as it is a welcome edition to her world.

I love the gumption, courage, faith it takes to give up the track of one's life to travel for a year at 35. It took a bit for me to get into the rhythm but, along the way, different parts of Gilbert's experience won me. The crying on the bathroom floor every night until God tells her it is going to be okay, the notion that she needed to learn how to take pleasure and have faith, the scene in the car where her friend has her ask permission (in theory) of everyone she needs permission from in order to go. And I love the people she meets along the way-- including herself.

Totally cute chick-lit that my friend Corie let me borrow. Quick read. Happy ending. Fun!

Tina is a fantastic storyteller. Just enough feminism to make it a powerful comedic read. Also worth it to get the audio version because she narrates it herself.

This is my all time favorite book. It's incredible and beautiful.

I found this to be the singular most irritating gift upon graduation day...and while I like Dr. Seuss okay and all, I don't necessarily find wisdom in his rhymes upon graduating from college. When Dr. Seuss can find me a job, then I'll appreciate the gift.

It was good but a little too much like a self help book.

I loved Please Ignore Vera Dietz. There were so many layers of the story, but I never felt a loss of momentum in the plot. Vera’s struggles with her father, with her (now dead) best friend Charlie and with the other people in her orbit fascinated me. I liked that the story was broken up into non-chronological chunks. The story is told by Vera in the first person, but secondary characters get a chance to explain their side of the story. Even the town’s ornamental Pagoda gets a chance to speak its mind. Highly recommended.

I enjoy books about time travel. The concept amuses me. But I felt that this book could have done so much more. Maybe that is what the next books in the series are for. However, I am not planning on reading them. The pace is a little slow for my tastes and some sections were not for me either. What I learned from this book 1. you know true love when you find it and 2. modern medicine is amazing.
