Joyce Carol Oates managed to write an entire novella that, in real-time, takes place in the course of about five minutes. And very artfully done. It’s a book that can easily be consumed in a single sitting: yesterday I bought it, walked to the park and sat down on a bench, and finished it about an hour and a half later. It’s the type of read that’s broken into short segments, each segment leading you to automatically turn to the next. The rhythm of the prose synchs with the terror of the novella’s circumstances, which is a characteristic I love so much about Oates. Black Water tells the story of an all-American type young woman (Kelly) who meets a senator at a friend’s barbecue. She leaves the party with him, and his car plunges into sewages, enclosing the car in a vessel of filthy, rising waters. This is where present time begins: the moment of the wreck. The reader is then taken back in time to learn random details of Kelly’s past, along with the day’s events that lead up to the wreck. We even learn that she’d written her college thesis on the senator himself. Although nearly every page references politics, Black Water is less of a political story and more about truth/deceit, and outer appearances vs. true personality. I didn’t realize it as I read, but the scenario closely resembles the famous Chappaquiddick incident of 1969—although the book obviously isn’t directly about this incident, considering it takes place in the early 90s.

** spoiler alert ** From the title of this book I didn't think that this would be about anything "positive". To say the least it wasn't positive at all. This book did have me anticiapted to turn the page to find out what would happen next. It even had a twist that I didn't expect! The book started off fillinf me in about a a parole officer that was in love with her parolee. That piece of information brought a sense of shock over me. Who in their right mind would risk their job? I guess love makes you do crazy things. They even lived together, it somewhat seemed unreal. The funny thing about this book was how the female parole officer tried so hard to keep their relationship a secret. One of her co-workers came over her house and saw a picture of the two (parole officer and parolee); which lead to questioning. Soon she made up many lies when people came close to summing up the truth between the two. I found the parole officer to be very stupid. She told her boyfriend (parolee) not to sell drugs; he decided not only to sell drugs but to cheat on her. She still stayed with him but threatened to turn him in. I bet you're wondering if she ever turned him in? Not telling!! The twist in the story was that a female character in the book which so happened to be the parolee's "real girlfriend" that took the wrap and did jail time for him. Her time in jail was soon to be over; she would be set free. The only thing that everybody doesn't know was that she had a couple tricks up her sleeve! Never ever underestimate a crazy woman! In Conclusion, over all I believe the author Kiki Swinson did an "ok" job on this book. Although she did a good job with the title, which would draw people in. I would recommend this book to people who like to read Urban African American books.
