South Beach is often called a low-carb diet, which makes it seem similar to the Atkins Diet. The difference is that South Beach is a low-carb and low-fat diet. In the book, Dr. Agatston explains the original purpose of the diet was not weight loss, but the prevention of heart disease. Reading the book, I realized it confirmed what my mom had been telling me for years: "Mansoor, to lose weight and be healthy, you need to cut four things out of your diet: white flour, white rice, white sugar, and milk." The book doesn't mention milk, but it does recommend a complete break from the other three. Naturally, I didn't listen to my mother's advice until it was confirmed by a book. And, then I lost seven pounds and two inches. Definitely consider this book (and the diet) if you're trying to lose weight. The diet will help you trim down, and not at the expense of your health.

A young apprentice to the great painter and sculptor Michelangelo tries to find a way to please his master by using the knowledge of mixing paints taught to him by his father. I liked this story for the interesting insight into the character of Michelangelo. It's a shame that the frescoes to be created by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci on opposite walls of the same building were never completed. What a spectacle that would have made!

Thought I would like this book but it left me disappointed and with a curious sense of being ashamed. I felt there was something somewhat unsavory about her 'need' to use this community for her own ends. Like other readers have mentioned, I kept feeling there was this underlying condescending attitude that made me very uncomfortable. By the end of the book, I was convinced that other people, and their lives (especially their religious lives), are not for gawking at, no matter how curious I am. This book led me to believe the author fit my stereotype of an immature and shallow American tourist.

I enjoyed this book but found it difficult to read. A bit laborious but certainly well written, kind of slow at times. With that said, I really did like the psychological aspect of the novel; the idea that a child's view of the adult world and subsequent actions taken based on that interpretation might cause such damage. It makes you think about your own life and how perhaps your interpretation of events has not always been accurate. Just imagine how your life might be different if that one thing that happened to you to influence who you are was in fact a misinterpretation!

very good. i actually really loved it except for the fact that their wasn't enough romance. If you want a book filled with romance and passion then this isn't the book for you. However, besides that, this book is excellent. The characters just draw you into them and I have to admit, I hold a soft spot in my heart for Alice.

Quirky and fun story about a character who can read herself into books. Loved the layers of literary in-jokes. A friend said that it was the trippiest book he'd ever read, but he was naming his next cat after the villain.
