Ok, usually Christian fiction is cornball, but this book was awesome! I really enjoyed the setting of the French court of Catherine de Medici. The main character here is Rachelle, a maker of silk dresses and other clothing for French royalty. She is invited to design and sew the dresses for Margurete (sp?), Catherine de Medici's daughter. There, Rachelle is drawn into the deceit and intrigue that is a part of the French court. I liked how the author whipped all these French words into the narrative and how she also put her fictional character into contact with real, historical characters. I have finished the second in the series, "Written on Silk". There is a third, which I would like to read now. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series.

The master of Sword and Sorcery. Great stories that scare and delight; a hero, who's strength and cunning go unrivaled, and a good dollop of other-world building that make all Conan's novels great reads.

My favorite Faulkner book and another great one to read aloud to others. Just make sure you invent voices for all the characters. It's fun and a little grotesque all at the same time.

this book, much like pansy division's music, is a lot of fun. & super-gay. whee! i don't think you'd like this book if you're not into the music (or early/mid-90's queercore, at the very least), but i've loved pansy division since high school, so for me it was a fun behind-the-music book full of gossip, cute anecdotes, a lil' dose of drama-queen-ness and generally a conflict-free quick read that made me really happy.

One of the greatest books of the 20th century and one of the most rewarding to read.

As are all of Maeve Binchy's books, this one was wonderful. Another "Can't put down" where I would yell at some of the characters for behaving, in my opinion, stupidly. I especially loved how Eve and Benny complement each other so well. Don't we all wish that we had a best friend like that? I definitely recommend this absorbing read.

"A perfect day for bananafish" and "Teddy" are my favorite stories from this book. I was going to review these stories separately but I really didn’t get a lot of them. I do love the way Salinger writes but there is something unsettling about his stories. He seems to like the interactions between adults and children. A lot of the stories in this book have a child and an adult interacting. It’s kind of weird, or is that just me who gets the creepy crawlies from that? A lot of people speculate about his propensity to include young girls in his stories saying he was attracted to them. That seems evidenced by who he chose to involve himself with at times, but an older man with a younger woman is nothing new. Some think perhaps he secluded himself because he didn’t want to be tempted by the young girls out in the world? Or he used his seclusion to carry on secret relationships with younger women? Others think he used the character of a young girl as a representation of all that is innocent and pure in direct relief to much darker and complexly disturbed characters. When you put his writing into the context of the time he wrote that seems to make more sense. Sexual predators were not on people’s radar as prominently as they are now. It’s easy for us to jump to conclusions in 2010 but he wrote in a post WWII era. He wrote of adolescence, to adolescents. Perhaps he was a creepy old man obsessed with youth, but he was undeniably one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Reading Salinger is not just an intellectual experience, but a physical one as well. His writing strikes you so hard you can feel it. I love that.

My friend recommended this series to me calling it "the Harry Potter for smart kids". I liked the series because of the intruiguing world the author had created, and the fact that the book tackled both fantasy and religious themes at the same time. Pullman also keeps the readers engaged by slowing leaking the back story of the trilogy over the three novels, making it impossible for the reader to guess what happens next because the reader doesn't really comprehend Pullman's universe themself. However, with that said, I must say that while the first two books were engaging and entertaining (they would get 5 stars), the third book utterly wastes everything that the first two books built up. Not only does the pacing seem off compared to the first two books, but the escalating tension does not come to fruition, but rather is squandered on a rather generic and poorly thought out ending. The potential of this series was an 11, but instead it crashed into a 2. The first two books were good enough to bring the final rating up to a 3. p.s. I am excited to see how these movies will turn out.

The First Patient is a quick paced drama set in D.C. I picked this one up to have as a quick read that offered drama, action and a bit of suspense but did not require much thought. Michael Palmer delivered. The story was a bit predictable; I had it figured out pretty early. But the action was good, the writing was quick and to the point. The dialogue was a bit forced in some areas and a little weak in others but overall The First Patient matched my expectations.
