I poured myself a Dolly Parton cup of ambition to ready myself for reviewing this book. I think it just went to my boobs... They are growing to be enormous, my god. I'll put on a corset for a Little Florida Whore House review, showing off my high kicks for the business of dancing around saying what I really think, and playing footsie with the stuff I like, and more dancing. Kinda hard though, what with the enormous boobies. Could be a cigar girl. It was okay to smoke back then.

A fantastic read. Donleavy writes with a vulnerable voice and its that very voice that keeps you entertained the whole way through...can't wait to read the rest of the work of this brilliant man.

What a terrific read! This is a story of two people late in life, each having survived a spouse, coming together in a friendship that has tantalizing possibilities. Some heavy issues are recognized--including race relations, culture and class as well as loss and death--but with a fairly light touch and a rewarding amount of humor. The characters, pacing and the descriptions of the English countryside are excellent. This was a book to which I happily devoted most of my weekend.

What a vast, exhausting, complicated mire of a book. Usually in a review I begin by summarizing the plot of a book, but this book doesn't have a plot in the traditional sense. Instead, it develops a picture of a fascinating time in human history (roughly Cromwell's revolution to the Glorious Revolution, with the period from 1688-1713 being covered, presumably, in the other two books in the series.) Oh, did I mention that this is the first book in a trilogy? And it is 900 pages long, and the other two are equally lengthy? It's about calculus, but not really - it's about information distribution and the laws that govern both nature (as discovered by the natural philosophers who figure prominently - Newton, Leibnitz, Hooke, Huygens, and Locke all turn up to give the philosophy students something to cheer for) and human beings (as discovered by Eliza [not a historical figure:], John Churchill, all the Stuarts, Louis XIV, William of Orange, et al.) It's about how history is created not by happenstance and not in a big lump, but by the individual choices of the individuals in it - and the amount of information that they have or lack stands in direct relation to the choices they make. Quicksilver is also about politics and the stock market. The bad parts: Stephenson is, I'll say it, not the world's greatest writer (by a long shot) and he could really use an editor. His characters often resort to a technique called "As you know, Bob" in order to get across the vast quantities of information the reader needs to understand what's going on (the reader is, I presume, not a Ph.D. in European history). AYKB is this sort of dialogue: Bob: What does that button do? James: Well, as you know, Bob, that button is connected to a vast array of solar-powered gyrocopters. Since today is the international gyrocopter festival, I pushed the button to launch them. This is just sloppy - Bob has no reason to ask what the button does, since he already knows. He's being used as a puppet to allow James to deliver this crucial piece of info to the audience. Stephenson does this ALL THE TIME, and it drives me nuts. The good parts: Stephenson does some things which are relatively daring and interesting - parts of the book are in the form of letters and drama, with diagrams and footnotes and various genealogical charts. And the book itself is very engrossing - the fact that his writing is not as graceful as other authors' does not make it unreadable by any means. In the way that some have called Ulysses a ruin of a novel that is fun to wander around in, it is hard to judge Quicksilver as a success or failure because it is difficult to figure out exactly what Stephenson was trying to accomplish. There is no overarching plot to draw one on to the next two books, though I'm sure I'll read them eventually.

The Dark Glamour is a sequel to 666 Park Avenue. In the first book, Jane is swept of her feet by a rich, handsome stranger that she immediately falls in love with. She moves with him to New York and becomes part of the Doran clan. Jane's future mother-in-law, Lynne, is a bit pushy and wants things done her own way but Jane puts up with it because she thinks it all part of the wedding stress. One other thing, Jane is a witch, something she just found out before she moved to New York. It was something that her grandmother kept hidden. She didn't know it though until her Grandma passed away. Then she learned that her grandma had a protection spell around her so that other witches could not find her. Shortly before the wedding, Jane learns that Lynne is also a witch, and not just any type of witch, she is a truly evil one. On the day of her wedding, Jane learns just how evil she is and disappears shortly after the ceremony. This book picks up a few weeks after the first book ends. Rather than leaving the country, Jane decides to hide in NY. While in hiding, she learns about something that she believes if she can find it will make Lynne leave her alone. With the help of some friends, she uses a spell that will completely change her identity for 28 days. Now disguised as Ella, she has a fling with another handsome stranger, inflitrates the Doran mansion in search of something that will help her in her search, and jets off to London. At the end of the book you learn that everything is not as it appears to be and the stage is set for the next installment of the series. This book was not as good as the first but it was still very entertaining. Jane is still struggling with her powers and feels guilty for what she has put some of her friends through. She wants to prtoect them which leads to some mistakes on her part because she doesn't know who she can trust. I did like the end of the book and some of the twists that I was not expecting. I knew that Lynne was evil and obsessed with her family, I did not expect the reason why. I also liked the additional bit of history between Jane's family and the Dorans. I don't know how many books are going to part of this series but it seems like this one was more to set-up the next book as it was a little slow in spots.

This was the first Philip Roth book I read, and it is incredible. I read this book at a moderate pace: it's an interesting story, so you are motivated to read, but it is also quite complex, so it is not a fast read. The story focuses on a classics professor, Coleman, who is the victim of a scandal at his college. The book has a lot of insight on how we as people establish identity, and the issue of to what extent we can choose our identity.

Upon reading the Gunslinger, I immediately became addicted to this series. Went on to read the following 6 books within the next few weeks. The Dark Tower series is touted to be King's "magnun opus", and I believe it to be very true.
This is number 4 of the Spellman books, all of which are worth reading. Izzie Spellman works for her parents in the family private investigation business. She's smart, funny and completely neurotic. In this one Izzie finally starts to mature a bit, which is nice to see. Incredibly funny - the entire Spellman family is strange, but loving - it's told from Izzie's perspective, with straight narration, footnotes, transcripts of conversations (they like to tape each other) and emails.
I was disappointed with this book. I wasn't expecting it to be like a textbook with psychobabble, footnotes and references to other similiar works. I think that even for an academic text, 'Venus on Wheels' is weak because the author injects too much of herself into the narrative. You have to read about the author's hidden disabilities, her bisexuality and her analysis of why she was interested in Diane DeVries. I seriously could care less. I was interested in Diane DeVries journey as a woman with a disability. I skipped huge chunks of text just trying to follow Diane's life story. I hope Diane writes a solo autobiography soon.

A little too self-helpish for me, but the message/principle of the book was great.
