This book details a US Rangers-led rescue from the Japanese POW camp at Cabanatuan in the Philippines in 1945. The mission was considered highly important, both as one of the first missions to use the newly constituted Ranger force, and because of very real concerns that the retreating Japanese would simply kill the prisoners before retreating. In telling the main tale, we get a parallel story starting with the fall of Bataan in 1942, the fabled Bataan Death March, and brutal conditions in the Japanese POW camps. Though Sides' language is florid to the point of sounding at times like pulp fiction, he includes a lot of facts and personal tales in his narrative in a skillful fashion, and much of the book's material is based on interviews with the principals involved. That, in turn, is one of the low-level annoyances in the book, in that tension is broken multiple times (especially when approaching the climax) by including a phrase like, "As Capt. Smith mentioned in newspaper articles after the war ...", letting us know that Capt. Smith actually ends up actually surviving the whole mission. While the dramatic (sometime melodramatic) language is strong, and Sides makes the mistreatment of the US prisoners very, very clear, he also presents a balanced analysis and occasional defense of the Japanese actions and individuals concerned throughout the war in the Philippines. James Naughton's narration for the audiobook is appropriately grim, hardbitten, and dramatic. Overall, this is a ripping tale of war, blood, disease, death, and freedom, and what the pressures of battle and imprisonment does to captives and captors alike. Highly recommended as insight into a part of WWII history that has not gotten as much attention as it should.

Love this series

This is a nice addition to the oeuvre of Katrina literature, but it feels oddly off. From the use of color (each section gets its own color) to the garrish faces on characters, this one left me a little cold.

Couldn't get through this one. It was pretty bland.

This book is billed as a mystery. A PI is bedridden and sees a woman walking a dog every day and then one day the dog is running lose. How to find the woman? But too me this book was more about the PI's feelings about being pregnant, marriage, changes in her life than the actual mystery.

More typical McPhee. This book waxes and wanes in interest, but covers Midwest and Mid-Atlantic region geology and related cultural history, including some talk about the historical scientific understanding of the Ice Ages. Best for geology nerds like me; the beginning and end are most interesting.

Reading The Bell Jar, I am tempted to disown everyone I know, for not making sure I'd read it earlier. As an early Salinger disciple, I most certainly would have been interested in this essentially female version of The Catcher in the Rye. Sylvia Plath hits right at the heart of female alienation with the prescribed life choices. I'm sure this book would have really blown my mind if I had read it in high school; as it stands I read it 10 years after the fact and still really felt it.

This is a brilliant book. I couldn't put it down. Sanderson creates an amazing world with great characters and a story full of mystery. My only complaint was the ending. It didn't quite leave me satisfied. But the book as a whole was incredible. I wish there was a sequel.
