Prudence Emerson is a thirteen-year-old girl living in the small town of Green Marsh, Massachusetts, in 1774. Her family had always been welcome there, but now, with whispers of a possible revolution against the rule of the British king, things are changing. The Emersons are Loyalists, while most of the townspeople, including the family of Prudence's best friend Abigail, are Patriots. Their troubles start when business at the Emersons' store begins to dwindle, and things become steadily worse. The children of the Loyalists are persecuted at school. Prudence finds that Abigail has been forbidden to speak with her. As the persecution of the Loyalists becomes violent, Prudence begins to wonder if her family will have to leave the only home she has ever known. I really enjoyed this new Dear America book. It gave a unique perspective on life at the beginning of the American Revolution by using the point of view of a young Loyalist girl. Readers interested in a look at the "other side" of the American Revolution are sure to enjoy this book.

Childhood memoir about a crazy mother? Sounds familiar. Thumbs up. Definitely disturbing.

The day thirteen-year-old Bree O'Toole and was captured by Viking raiders, her life changed forever. Now she is far from her home in the green hills of Ireland, in a strange new country where all she has to look forward to is a life of slavery. Determined to escape that fate, Bree and one of the other captives, a younger girl named Lil, escape the Viking ship and head into the hills of Norway, hoping to make their way to a trading village where they can find safe passage back to Ireland. But the hardships she faces on her escape cause Bree to struggle to hold on to her courage and to her faith that God will protect her. And as her captor, the young Viking leader Mikkel, searches for her, he faces a personal struggle of his own: did he do the right thing by leading that raid? Meanwhile, Bree's older brother, Devin, who was set free before the Vikings left Ireland, is determined to find a way to go after his sister, but he struggles with his feelings of anger and hate toward the Vikings who tore apart his family. This was an excellent continuation of the first book in the Viking Quest series, Raiders from the Sea. The historical details are wonderful, and I loved the unique setting. I'd highly recommend this book to all readers who read the first book, but new readers should start at the beginning of the series, otherwise this book won't make as much sense. I look forward to reading the other three books in this series and seeing what happens to Bree, Devin, and Mikkel next.

Mr. Golding is my hero. I wish I could write a first novel like Lord of the Flies... As to The Spire, it's captivated me from the start; the first paragraph struck me as almost cinematographic.. the depiction of a single instance in the life of a man, in his movements, in his physical being that almost resembles a painting but vibrant with the life of a modern photograph or still. It's fantastic how the author softly unfolds a plot, a background of conflict and the motivations of complex characters from a single still image.

Was a very good book, hard to put down. It has very futuristic tones, but at the heart is a thriller, detective story. Will be reading the follow up book, Soul Intent. Best thing is, this is a free kindle download. Check it out.

I love Paula to death, but I'm not sure I'd ever pick this up if I didn't. It's very easy to hear her voice as you read each page, but if you don't like her humor or are not familiar with her work (and I feel sorry for you if you're not!) I think you're missing out. It would be kind of like watching Pirates of the Caribbean 2 without knowing anything about Johnny Depp or Pirates 1. The book is broken down into chapters that focus on one historical figure each and then contrasts their life and accomplishments to her own. It's not all self-deprecating, but it's definitely interesting and funny. There were maybe a half dozen times I literally laughed out loud!

The subject of course, is fascinating and being an art history major, well, its right up my alley. Who doesn't love a dramatic tragic artist? Written in an interesting way.

This book is phenomenal. I feel like Francie Nolan is right up there with Jo March and Anne Shirley. The difference with this book is that the poverty is more raw, less romanticized. While I've never experienced poverty the way the Nolans do, it seems like there are elements from each chapter that I was able to relate to. Many times, those moments brought a smile to my face.

Skipped a whole lot of it. Interesting concept and good analysis, but just gets boring.
