All of Thomas Hardy's novels and stories are pretty sad, but Jude The Obscure is REALLY FUCKING DEPRESSING. I'm giving this book four stars because it's really well written, but honestly, I hated it.

There's a reason why this book was a Hugo winner. It's excellent. Chock full of ideas and theories regarding extra terrestrials, the solar system and how it will develop as time passes as the sun expands, and the more intimate life and emotional turmoil of a few people who were affected by it and involved in it all.

It has been a while, and I can't remember this book all that well. There were some cool ideas-- I've always found memory and perception vs. reality to be an interesting topic. But the fact that I can't remember much isn't all that encouraging.

My husband received this book as a gift before we had our son. He read it in one day (and he's not a "reader"). He refers to it at the beginning of each new month of our son's life. It has been really helpful to him. I read it as well, and it is easy to read, with a handful of humor....perfect for the new father!

I'm a fan of all the Casson Family books. Hillary McKay is such a talented writer, all things considered. One of my absolute favorites, in fact! Now, all that aside, I think Caddy Ever After is a bit of a plummet from her previous books (Saffy's Angel and Indigo's Star) as well as the newer ones (Permanent Rose and Forever Rose). It was good, by far, better than many books, but still not the best in the series. I couldn't connect as much with Caddy's character as I would have liked. Nevertheless, worth a read if you want to continue with the same series. Trust me, don't let this stray you away from the series! It's a great one. It gets better. I assure you!

Without spoilers, it's hard to discuss the things that could be seen as "shortcomings" in this excellent page turner. And I mean page turner. I loved it. But a lot of the story is more internal than some might like in this genre. I was riveted until the end.
