Fiber & Brimstone is the 8th Scrapbooking Mystery by Laura Childs. Her vivid descriptions make New Orleans come alive in front of your eyes. The charms of the French Quarter jump of the pages, making it a cozy to die for. The characters are sublime as well. Carmela and her best friend Ava are always fun to be with. Smart and loyal Carmela is the friend anyyone would love to have. Whenever a friend is in trouble, they can count on Carmela to offer a helping hand even if she has to risk life and limb to do it. While her partner-in-crime, the ever charming Ava, flirts her way through anything life tosses at her. Carmela and Ava make a great team solving any mystery. Having said that, I have to add that I found the mystery itself somewhat disappointing in Fiber & Brimstone. Carmela and Ava are so wrought up in their businesses, the monster puppet they are building for the Monster and Mayhem Torchlight Parade and all the Halloween parties that solving the murders felt like an afterthought. To me they didn't appear to spend all that much time looking for clues. However, I did enjoy the book, but mostly for its charm and characters.

Loved it, great way to teach children the basics of math with some easy-to-remember tricks

Loved this book - could identify with a lot of his childhood, though I wasn't beaten for speaking English - for plenty of other things - like being caught knitting on a Sunday! Informative book written in a deceptively easy style - plenty of fun masking the pain.

Barbara Metzger's regencies are full of fun and humor. Her heroines need a bit of rescuing, but so do her heros--just in a different way. "The Wicked Ways of a True Hero" is the third connected novel about a family whose sons have the 'special' inherited trait of being able to, in different ways, sense lies and deceit. Daniel has become something of a dissipated scoundrel since his release from the military. He spends his time gambling, drinking, and consorting with loose women. But he knows his freedom to carouse is about to be cut short because his mother and sister are coming to London for the season. If that weren't bad enough, they're bringing his sister's friend and mother's god-daughter...the same girl he had to retrieve from an inn while trying to elope with a no-good cad! What can his mother be thinking? Corie has despised Daniel ever since he foiled her youthful escape from her abusive father. And the things she's heard about his life since the military certainly don't change her mind. But living in the same house in London and seeing how he cares for his mother and sister and protects them...and even her despite his opinion of her, may just change her mind. I have to admit that I didn't enjoy this book as much as I have all the rest by Barbara Metzger. I didn't particularly like Corine OR Daniel. Corine came across as more witless than winning and Daniel seemed rather slow. I also missed the normally sparkling banter I'm used to from this author. The relationship between the main characters suffered from a constant lack of communication and that bugged me. They didn't blow hot and cold...they just blew cold and then all of a sudden realized they cared for each other. That just doesn't work for me. "The Wicked Ways of a True Hero" is a G-rated romance whose sex scenes are more along the lines of make-out sessions. I would have no problem letting a young teen read this as well as most other of Metzger's works. But to be blunt, I'd recommend they start with her House of Cards trilogy which I found fabulous from start to finish.

Paints interesting portraits of some interesting characters. Fun to read but just kind of ends instead of coming to some nice conclusion.

This rates a C-. It was all right but I don't feel strongly about it. It's a short story/novella. My main objection is that I didn't buy the emotion--love--between them. Yes, they had a physical attraction, but this puritanical, moral man had no reason to love her. He didn't know her--at all. They played one game of checkers. That does not a relationship make. And she is a whore. She has been for years, and a madam. Evidently EH thinks because she's been abstinent for 2 years it wipes out the years of whoring (or maybe she was just the mistress of several different men, I can't recall now), but I don't think so. I could see him being kind to her and helping her start a new life, but they never conversed, never went outside her room, he only saw her face 2 or 3 nights without her mask. Just exactly how did he fall in love with her? If you like EH, though, it'll be a nice way to pass a few hours.

this series is the best series I've ever read...since Twilight.

The book is good (yes, it's tedious and repetitive, but that's kinda the point, no?), but I have to say that this is one of the few times where the movie actually improves upon the novel. Mary Harron's adaptation is skillful and frightening ... even more so than the book, in my opinion.

Great debut novel from Ian Esslemont. It takes place in the same world as the Malazan Books of the Fallen by Steven Erikson; the two authors co-created that world. If I could go back and change the order in which I read all the books by these two guys, I would read Night of Knives first, then the first six volumes of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, then Esslemont's second book, Return of the Crimson Guard.
