This is an outstanding book about America's food system and how radically it has changed in the last half-century. Salatin uses the refrain, "Folks, this ain't normal" throughout the book as he discusses the way things are versus the way they used to be. It is not as though Salatin is Luddite, either. He embraces the use of technology and innovation in ways that are beneficial. He is wary about the way technology and innovation undermine the values our society holds dear. This is fundamentally what the book is about--recapturing the "why" of the way things used to be. For example, in examining why farmers moved away from composted manure as a fertilizer to the synthetic fertilizers, Salatin is very forgiving to that first generation of farmer facing the choice. He understood why farmers were so willing to abandon manure and move to bagged, "clean" fertilizer, away from stinky manure. Yet he is very quick to condemn farmers who stuck with the synthetic fertilizers after their negative effects became apparent. What was lost is the rationale for using manure. Manure simply is the best way to fertilize a pasture or field. It is, in Salatin's words "biomimicry"--that is a process seen in nature that requires no external inputs and has no negative environmental impact. Throughout the book, and especially as the book closes, Salatin points his finger at government regulation in collusion with agri-business in regulating innovation and small farmers out of business. The regulations placed on farmers such as Salatin are so staggering that it is almost miraculous that he and others can exist and even thrive. Read this book and open your eyes to the lies we've been told all our lives about food and government.
