This is an outstanding book about America's food system and how radically it has changed in the last half-century. Salatin uses the refrain, "Folks, this ain't normal" throughout the book as he discusses the way things are versus the way they used to be. It is not as though Salatin is Luddite, either. He embraces the use of technology and innovation in ways that are beneficial. He is wary about the way technology and innovation undermine the values our society holds dear. This is fundamentally what the book is about--recapturing the "why" of the way things used to be. For example, in examining why farmers moved away from composted manure as a fertilizer to the synthetic fertilizers, Salatin is very forgiving to that first generation of farmer facing the choice. He understood why farmers were so willing to abandon manure and move to bagged, "clean" fertilizer, away from stinky manure. Yet he is very quick to condemn farmers who stuck with the synthetic fertilizers after their negative effects became apparent. What was lost is the rationale for using manure. Manure simply is the best way to fertilize a pasture or field. It is, in Salatin's words "biomimicry"--that is a process seen in nature that requires no external inputs and has no negative environmental impact. Throughout the book, and especially as the book closes, Salatin points his finger at government regulation in collusion with agri-business in regulating innovation and small farmers out of business. The regulations placed on farmers such as Salatin are so staggering that it is almost miraculous that he and others can exist and even thrive. Read this book and open your eyes to the lies we've been told all our lives about food and government.

This was the first book I'd read by Vonnegut. I really liked the concept of a character that experienced all of his life as if it were one moment and slips in and out of moments in time freely. Will be reading more from Vonnegut in the future.

frazier's conclusions were frequently off the mark, but this book is really interesting anyway.

Yes, it’s schmaltz, no, it’s not great literature, but I was captivated by this story of a very young mother battling cancer. Ok, I read it when I was close in age to the main protagonist, and it was a long time ago, and I am fascinated by stories of people with cancer, but I would still recommend it. I reread it several times, and I would bet it holds up ok.

This is a great resource for developing your prayer life. It is relevant to someone who is struggling or questioning whether prayer matters. It also provides references for those who are looking to go deeper in their prayer life, or revitalize it. Bottom line - prayer is different for each person, and there is no 'right' way to pray. Good resource.

This book leaves me speechless. What is art? What is performance art? If you're an artist, how does your art affect your family?
I absolutely loved this book!! Beginning to end it was wonderful! The characters were great and I felt for each of them in their own ways! Basically it is a good girl in college meets a bad boy and they have whirl wind romance and then he disappears then jumps 6 years and he appears in a coma and is once again in her life. Of course she has seemingly moved on so it is complicated. Throw in a deep down well meaning best friend and a little murder mystery and this just makes a really great book! It was a quick read because it was so good and kept moving forward. Truely one of my recent favorite books!!
