Took awhile to get into this one, but now there's so much happening at once. ARGH I feel like this book was a bit indulgent. There were parts that went on and on. It took longer to read this book. After finishing book #4, I'm ready for a WOT break.

Not as strong a read as The Hunger Games. It starts off slowly, and, in my opinion, wastes some great characters and opportunities to set up the sequel. But just like its predecessor, excellent details and simple yet complicated plotting make it worth the journey.

The story of friendship between the two boys is really mesmerizing. I learned so much about life in Afghanistan prior to the war. I came to realized that the country used to be beautiful and prosperous until the conflict that is going on still (to a certain extent) happened. I saw the movie but it was faithful to the book but maybe the production was not big budgeted. This novel also influenced me to give in to my daughter's dream of flying a kite. So last February, we went to Tagaytay and I bought 2 kites for us to fly and enjoy. Jillian had a nice time even if our kites did not manage to stay afloat for more than a minute!

I gave this book more than its fair share of chances because it was given to me by a friend whose recommendations I usually love (Time Traveler's Wife, etc). I started and abandoned it several times, putting it down after Towner tells us not to believe anything she says because she lies all the time. I think that was supposed to be all mysterious and intriguing, but I was totally turned off. Why should I bother reading a book you're telling if it's all lies? Bah. But I struggled through, and it did get better. I actually got pulled into the story and stayed up way too late a few nights reading along, but I was still totally disappointed when I got to the end. The "twist" annoyed me. Reading on the back dust jacket that the author has a dog named Byzantium (same name as the dog in the book) made me even more so. It was too mysterious for its own good, I have very little idea what actually happened and I don't care enough to try to figure it out.

Il vero protagonista del libro è la peste. Tutte quante le pagine ne sono cosparse e infette, tanto da farti essere contento di vivere in un'epoca in cui il grande flagello ha perso completamente il suo antico smalto. E poi, come sempre, grande cura nella descrizione del Medioevo, con le sue bassezze e superstizioni, corruzione e potere, dove la grande istituzione della Chiesa la fa da padrone. Ovviamente era impossibile ripetere il capolavoro dei Pilastri della Terra, questa volta manca l'atmosfera magica che rende un buon libro un capolavoro.
