The first novel is a great re-working of the dragon story: filled with the naval milieu of the time, at least 2-d characters, and some wonderful action. Books 2 and 3 are fine but lack the vim and vigor of the first.

I was worried when I started it that I wouldn't like it at all, but it was quite good. The story (I thought) lost a little steam in the second half, and while I liked (or hated, as appropriate) the characters, I didn't really feel attached to them until late in the book. But I suppose that's part of the point -- Celie and Mr. ________ both grow and change throughout the book. And why couldn't Alice Walker give Mr. ________ a last name? That was kind of annoying. :-)

It's an interesting book--I don't know that's it's really anything more than a Wallace biography, but there's nothing wrong with biography (I have recently admitted). I was reading it for work, but it's a pleasurable read.

I'm probably in some sort of Phillistene minority on this (the guy's famous for a reason) but I thought most of his stuff was meh at best. So many couplets. So many couplets! You know it's a bad sign when you grudgingly accept that you found a good line. The only thing I knew about the guy before reading his stuff was "to his coy mistress" and that remains all that's worth knowing... he's political and sometimes venomous, and just rubs me the wrong way.

This is a collection of short stories from a Soviet woman writer. They're character-based stories and beautifully written. Really interesting stories about common lives in the Soviet Union with average yet powerful characters.

I love stories where one has to piece everything together. The Sound and the Fury is a book where the reader can't just sit back and be told a story. The reader has to piece together who is speaking and when and who about. I read this in college and most of my clasmates abandoned it, so I felt very proud of myself for sticking it out and enjoying it.
