This is a book about stories and it is told in the second person. That's right, "you" are the main protaganist. The book is full of only the beginnings of stories, a series of them, all cut off before the reader can discover the ending. In other words, this is not the story for everyone. I found it quite compelling, however, and had no trouble finishing it as the author drew me into each story and rather than feeling betrayed by the unfinished ending I simply found myself drawn into the next tale.

I liked this more than "Before Midnight," which I read at the same time. The characters and plot are a little more consistent. As with all of Dokey's fairy tale stories, it's a quick, sweet read.

I enjoyed the humorous, if slightly too journalistic, writing style as well as the month-by-month, day-by-day format of The Year of Living Biblically. On the whole, it was entertaining and delightfully fluffy compared to the books I usually read in the religion genre. Having factoids and stories thrown at you without too much context was surprisingly enjoyable (the Jewish mixed-fiber inspector, for instance), and gave me some avenues that I'd like to explore further in a more academic context. And to top it off, there were a few genuine "ah-ha!" moments scattered throughout the book, due to Jacobs' ability to accessibly articulate his personal spiritual journey. Even though I think Jacobs' writing style could carry someone through this book even if they had no interest in the Hebrew Bible, I wouldn't recommend The Year of Living Biblically unless you have at least a passing interest in the topic. As a religious studies major, I loved the details -- but I'm sure someone could feel like they weight down the book if they didn't have an interest in the subject or weren't O.C.D.
