13 Reasons Why is moving, suspenseful, and by the end will give you a sense of hope. The novel's structure is unique because it incorporates two different narrators, Hannah and Clay, that share a connection. Hannah is a teenage girl that just committed suicide and had made tapes explaining why and how these different people in her life and the events that took place with each of them affected her and her ultimate decision. Clay, a boy in Hannah's class, receives the tapes. As Hannah explains Clay listens, reacts, and tries to understand her mystery. The biggest lesson in this novel, that Hannah teaches Clay, is that everything we say and do affects someone else. It may be small, it may be great, it may not mean something at the moment, but it will in some way. It's made me notice how I treat people, and I think everyone would benefit from reading it.

This story of a group of very different, but strong women, and how each of their lives is changed at the beginning of the civil rights movement in Mississippi was stunning. It immediately drew me in and I could so clearly envision each of the characters as I read this story that was both funny and heart-wrenching. When I am nearing the end of a book that I really like I tend to slow down my reading because I don't want the story to end quite yet. I found myself reading at a snail's pace toward the end of this one. I knew I would miss Abilene and Minny and all of the other characters. I wanted it to go on, so that I could see what would happen in each of their lives after all of the pivotal moments had been resolved. When it's truly sad to see a book end, that must be the sign of a GOOD book! I'm so glad Kathryn Stockett wrote this amazing, important story and that I took a chance and read it.

This book is my favorite from childhood, after 21 years i still have the first page memorized. I would recommend this book to anyone perfect for teenagers, especially angst ridden loners like i was books were my friends and this one was the closest.
