I absolutely love this Once Upon a Time series! The Wild Orchid is a retelling of the ballad of Mulan. The series is a collection of fairy tales which have been adapted and retold beautifully by the collection of authors. These are great reads for young adults who are looking for adventure, coming of age, and a little bit of romance.

This was not my favorite Maisie Dobbs book. It seems a little longer than necessary and has a looser focus than some of the earlier installments. Maisie's job is not to find out who murdered Greville Liddicote, head of a private college in Cambridge for international pacifists. Instead she is supposed to take a teaching job there in order to report on any political activity that may be of interest or bear further watching. However, apparently the presence on the faculty of Nazi party members is of less concern to the Secret Service than the pacifist nature of the school. Of course, Maisie does take an interest in the death of Liddicote and uncovers some interesting information about his famous children's book and the relationships among a variety of characters. Meanwhile, Maisie wants to see Billy and his family move into a new suburban house before their baby is born, and she spends about 2/3 of the book fretting over whether James is not in Canada where he says he is, but avoiding doing anything about her concern because she is not sure that they have prospects for a happy future together.

A true masterpiece. Hosseini never fails to please me. If he ever writes another book, I will be one of the first people in line to buy it. I cannot even tell which of his first two books I liked more! I probably love them both, ["The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns":]. Remarkable. Truly excellent. A definitely gorgeous read.

My knowledge of history is sparse - when i was at school it was kings and dates between 45BC and 1603. When we got to 1603 we started again. As a result my knowledge of world history is poor and the events after 1603 a mystery. Schama has, with his usual clarity, lightened some of my darkness and I have to thank him for it. Unlike many historians he is clear and non-judgemental in his writing which allows me to form my own opinions about events and to see parallels in the present day.
