Read aloud to Levi and Haley. A perfect read-aloud book with short, lyrical chapters in which each word counts. The seemingly small story of a china rabbit ends up illuminating life, death, and love. The edition we read has beautiful, vintage-looking plate illustrations. It was a high point of our summer.

I liked it. Daemon must be read first before Freedom. Daemon amazes with the tech reality of current times, Freedom is an interesting projection of what could happen because of Internet warfare between various military types and an altruism based democracy called the darknet. Both books are packed full of techno thriller elements that are intelligent and exciting and realistic. Freedom wasn't quite as good as Daemon but it's worth reading and a good sequel. However, I could not believe in Freedom as I did Daemon. Dissension among the ranks is remarkably absent and the quick resolving of the issues by overcoming a single location was more fantasy than I could buy into, but still as an idea book it's great.

This is one of my favourite Pratchett novels. Up until now he has been creating the Discworld and its characters and this is one of the first in which Discworld is sufficiently formed for him to start dealing with parallel moralities. Why do peoples go to war and what triggers the mindless jingoism that potentially kills entire generations? This book is certainly funny and full of the verbal cleverness, in both dialogue and plot, that we expect from TP but there is the spectre of a darker side, a dark light shone on the round world and what it displays is something we should challenge.

The book was an interesting take on a modern dystopia. However I was disappointed by so many loose ends and the ending seemed almost rushed. I may look into the rest of the trilogy, but it's disappointing that the other books have different characters.

Great little story....and I really loved the math problems/concepts interspersed throughout the book..though you don't have to love math to enjoy this book...very quick read...reminds me a bit to the book, Tuesdays with Morrie...recommend it

Some of these stories were very good, but this was not really a book about food - it was a compilation of stories that had a very weak theme: an unforgettable meal. Some of the writing was very verbose. Some incomprehensible. I can certainly understand unforgettable meals, but these were more life stories. And the title story is actually Death by LOBSTER Pad Thai. Why change the title? And why put it as the LAST story? Overall an ok read, but I won't pick it up again.

Some very interesting points/advice on the Gen Y. As a borderline Baby Boomer, I find it challenging to relate to the Gen Y folks. This book gave some specific tips (among them): Tell them the rules. Give them a scorecard. Be flexible. Realize it's a transactional based relationship - you pay them, they have to do specific tasks. Don't ignore them when they're doing great. The latter is tough for me because I'm one of those "If you don't hear from me, everything's fine" managers. There are some amazing anecdotes in the book. Mind boggling, actually. From parents calling bosses to tell them that they're aren't giving their kids the right work to Gen Yers sending emails to the CEO with ideas in their first few months of work. Yikes. The reality is that this generation is in the workforce in full and a good leader needs to learn how to adapt to their style. Any tips on that subject are welcome.
