This book was incredible! It's full of deceptively simple stories and an amazing positive attitude. I suspect that I'll be able to read it over and over. Brahm's descriptions of his prison ministry are very inspiring, and even the old fables I've heard a dozen times over gain new depth in the context of his writing.

I liked this book for the same reason I liked Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. A good story and fictional characters that blended into a particular moment in history and could have been real people. These stories give you a feel for what it was like to go through tragic and difficult times. In this case the Jews in Hitlers ethnic cleansing during World War II.

The only reason I quit reading this one is because it was due back at the library and was on hold, so I couldn't renew it. I learned so much from the 3 chapters I did read, and will definitely finish it in the future.

Boomsday satirizes both the culture of the U.S. capital, Washington, and Baby Boom culture - which Buckley gets just right, and does a good job of weaving and connecting the two jingoistic and narcisstic cultures. Cassandra Devine, frustrated and infuriated by the expenditures and tax increases being demanded of her generation (Millenials) launches an attack, that includes a proposal for Baby Boomers to "voluntarily transition," at the age of 65 to reduce the burden and debt on her generation. Inexplicably (or rather for the plot of the satire) the plan takes off and before Cassandra knows it, she's a punditrity with a spot on a presitigous Presidential Commission. A pleasant satire, that captured D.C.'s political machine perfectly, but struggled to capture the Millenials as well as it captured the Baby Boomers.

I will forever maintain that Sandman is the best comic ever written. Gaiman was originally given the task of resurrecting a not particularly interesting golden age DC superhero, and instead, managed to change comics forever. He created the Endless- Destiny, Death, Destruction, Dream, Desire, Despair, and Delirium (who used to be delight), created a whole new mythology based on so many sources- Greek/Roman/Egyptian/Norse mythology, fairy tales, fables, DC comic book characters, and of course, Gaiman's own brilliant, twisted psyche. Even if you don't think you like comic books, you should read the Sandman books. They are not like any "comic" you have ever read before, and Gaiman is a true genius. Dream Country is perhaps the least tied together of the books after the first book, but still has a lot of great stories in it.

I wanted to like this book and it started off strong with a relationship between two half-sisters, one from China and one from the US. But the book lost me in all of it's flashbacks and ghost stories. I did enjoy the last hundred or so pages when the girls are in China and the ending, but feel like I really didn't get sucked in like I wanted to.
