Dickens had been writing serialised novels for thirty years when OMF was first published. It shows a maturity in its style and complexity with a much darker humour than (e.g.) the Pickwick Papers. The plot is like the Thames, a constant theme throughout the novel. The characters, their foibles and stupidities are the real relish of this book. It is difficult to know whether he is observing with fondess or satirical sharpness the struggles of the nouveaux riches to establish themselves in Victorian society. I would love to think that Nicodemus Boffin was the model for Discworld's harry King, which would Pratchett even funnier.

I reread this in time for the first Hobbit movie. Still not sure how there are going to be three of them. The first time I read it, I was not impressed. I like it a little better now, after the second read, but it doesn't match the excitement of the Lord of the Rings. Bilbo is a fun character, and it will be nice to see the riddle game played out. Perhaps the necromancer will show up in the movies? That could add a few minutes...I suspect that, instead of having Bilbo get knocked out and missing the end of the Battle of Five Armies we'll see the whole thing, which makes for more excitement. I'm glad I reread it, so I can compare, but I like LotR better.

Ah, Cintra Wilson. How your brutal, merciless beauty has captured my heart. When she described Los Angeles as "a giant peach of a dream crawling with centipedes" I knew it was love. This collection of her screamingly funny essays lampooning our society's unhealthy fascination with fame and pop celebrity was LONG overdue when Penguin compiled it several years ago, and her message of "DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE, YOU SICK LITTLE PUPPIES" holds true now more than ever.

Imagine a world where you can only remember what happened today and when you go to sleep it's all forgotten? Now imagine if you had to piece your life together one journal entry at a time, completely dependent on someone else's recollection to recreate your life? This reminds me of Memento of course but certainly stands on its own. I was anxious to read more, annoyed when I got interrupted and interested to the last page - all the signs of a good book to me.

I liked this book. I would have liked it even better if there had been one character who was really a great example of the handbook. Especially considering the author of the handbook meets the woman who makes him want to change his way. I also would not recommend this book unless you are a believer. Jackson makes more references to religion than in any of her books I've read and I believe I've ready 95% of them.

this book was LONG.. and encyclopedia of shit that kept going on and on and on.. woeh!! for monkey's sake. he rants about useless things.. ok. i admit that it was fun in the start. but since im just a simple girl living in remote kuwait. i cant possibly know about half the thing this british author is talking about . thats when i felt like a time waste instead of a good humorous book.. i gave it 2 stars because he lost a point for going to such great lengths even when he didnt have to.. he would want to comment of EVERYTHING even if he had to say two words like (LOST: lost interest). lost another start and thats presonally for not knowing half the things he mentioned.. last star lost for his some what abusive language.. im down with saying ur opinions.. just dont cuss that much dude!.. and thats it.. a star for being fun while it lasted and a star for the interesting title.. is it me or is everything shit.. i'd say.. it's shit indeed..

The first great history book. In addition, there are spectacular passages like the Melian Conference where the Athenian envoy states: For ourselves, we shall not trouble you with specious pretences- either of how we have a right to our empire because we overthrew the Mede, or are now attacking you because of wrong that you have done us- and make a long speech which would not be believed; and in return we hope that you, instead of thinking to influence us by saying that you did not join the Lacedaemonians, although their colonists, or that you have done us no wrong, will aim at what is feasible, holding in view the real sentiments of us both; since you know as well as we do that right, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they canand the weak suffer what they must.

To be honest, Emma herself always kind of bugged me. I have to remind myself that this is the point. It always takes me a bit to slog through the beginning (when I find Emma completely annoying), but I think the payoff is worth it.

I won this book from the Goodreads "Giveaway". I was excited to be one of the winners. The short summary given for the book was very interesting. Twins Emily and Michael have just turned 13. They live with their widowed mother in her family's generations old home with their maid Mary. Emily and Michael begin a show of spiritualist parlor tricks for their friends and it begins to spiral out of control. During this time, Emily begins to learn more of her mother's history and the sadness and heartbreak in her family's past. While Michael enjoys the attention given, Emily sees more into the people and their feelings. I thought the book was well written. It was easy to imagine the setting and the characters within the story.
