I don't know if this book suffered the "English Patient" syndrome with me, but I did not come away a fundamentally different person. I had heard so many raving reviews about the story, but I was not as moved as I suspected. I think I will re-read.

The premise is decent--a straight teenager gets inspired to ask a gay classmate for a makeover after watching an episode of Queer Eye--and there are some nice touches of humor and sweetness in the story. The subplots exploring the main character's relationships with his divorced parents are also quite well done. Unfortunately, there were a number of less positive elements, too. I'd have liked the book a lot more if it were a little less didactic, if the characters didn't label girls who engaged in casual hookups "sluts," and if the resolution to the plot didn't happen quickly enough to give the reader whiplash.

I thought that the story was uniquely portrayed. We don't think about our freedom of choice until it's taken from us. Can you imagine a place where you were told who to marry, what to say, and how to dress? That isn't living, that is in all reality a prison. The glorious world around is slowly being destroyed bit by bit, it's time for us to stand up and do something about it. This book will fuel that desire to make change happen.

A novel of magic realism detailing the entire history of a family, told from the perspective of a girl named Alba who reads her grandmother Clara's journals. Clara can predict, but not alter, the future. The story is disturbing at times, but it is a good story nevertheless.

My favorite sci-fi war novel. It's quite old, and was loosely based on the Vietnam War, but the ideas are still relevant to this day. Puts a heavy damper on any enthusiasm about faster than light travel.

I won a copy of this book through First Reads. This book was a quick read for me and I enjoyed it, but I felt it needed more action and more of a climax. I felt like the author reached a certain point and then really didn't know what else to do or where to go so he found a entirely different way to end it than what I had expected. I enjoyed the subject matter (bedbugs), but thought that I would be itchy and paranoid while reading the book (other reviews had told me it would happen). I did not itch or have one paranoid episode, which was mildly disappointing.
