WOW! !!! Beautifully and perfectly rendered. Where does she get these stories? Ann Patchett slowly weaves these intensely, detailed experiences that are so true and fleshed out that they couldn't be made up. Yet each story is so different that you realize that she has created a whole world molecule by molecule. State of Wonder starts with a crisis. An employee of a pharmaceutical company, Anders, has left for the Amazon to check on a trunculant and secretive Doctor who is working on a fertility drug. The story begins with a letter and the news thatthis enployee, Anders, has died. And so begins the journey of his lab partner and friend, who is asked to follow in his footsteps; to find the truth about his death, and the progress of the Research Doctor who is hidden in an undisclosed location in the Amazon. From the moment that his lab partner, Marina, begins her quest, Ms Patchett weaves a story rich in exotic detail, complex ideas and emotions and the addition of amazingly fleshed out people who help guide her through her quest. Definitely worth the read! If you aren't already a Patchett fan, be prepared to be converted.

Harder to like than 'The Twenty-One Balloons' or 'The Giant,' because it's so wistfully bittersweet. The narrator meets a 'terribly old man,' secretive about the calling--an ornate and Rube Godberg-esque contraption for squirrels--he has found at the end of a long and imaginative life, but obviously wanting to pass that calling on to the right person. And then the old man is gone, and the narrator is stranded. There is something childlike, appealing, and sad in Pene du Bois's final plea for his readers' assistance.

Fantastic novel! I found Pride and Prejudice to be completely engrossing. The characters and storyline captured me (I, the giant nerd that I am, actually stayed up quite late reading it) and I thoroughly enjoyed the gentle romance among the different characters.

The introduction of Kato as a guide through hell for Setsuna makes things interesting, and the difficulties faced by Katan as he tries to escape from Rosiel's influence are interesting (geez, guy can't catch a break even when he's dead!). Setsuna's illusionary life with Sara, Kira, and the others is heartbreaking, but of course he wins major points for realizing it isn't real and that he's got a job to do. Here's hoping all these crazy kids manage to save the world before this series is over....
