Want an alternate view of how to build peace in Pakistan and Afghanistan? You'll find it here, although you'll have to wade through a lot to discover the full and very worthy tale. The telling of it, unfortunately, proves its greatest weakness, as does its apparent effort to serve as a fundraiser and application for the Nobel Peace Prize for Greg Mortenson. After the "Into Thin Air" beginning, the story and the schools build slowly through a fairly consistent middle, then the account starts to rush before it finally corkscrews through 9/11 into Afghanistan. I won't list examples or explain further what I mean, and so dwell on the poor writing. My purpose in mentioning these weaknesses is to acknowledge a wistfulness for a better vehicle for such a worthy tale and to say, yes, readers will encounter some rough patches, but don't, don't, don't let it stop you from finishing the story. The reward--a sense of greater insight and compassion for some areas of the world badly in need of both from the Western world, especially the US, could not be more timely. And as much as I bemoan its overt attempts at self-glorification, I do hope it succeeds in encouraging people to contribute to a different approach to relating to the Muslim world.

A heartbreaking story of a girl in Switzerland who is mistreated by her father, then by many people around her. She overcomes her trials and pushes forward to forge a life in the new world, but ends up in a roller-coaster life filled with hardship and anger. I found this a difficult read because there was more bitterness than joy in this journey of Marta's life, and I didn't walk away from it feeling any resolution or happiness for the family. There is one more book in the series, so maybe I will then.

This is the first book I've read in this series. I liked it a lot. I'll have to try some of the other books.

I like this book very much except for the twist ending. The characters were believeable and the story really held my interest. I liked the way she spoke to her psychiatrist about her situation. I think I liked Ms. Stevens other book, STILL MISSING, a little better but I would recommend thenm both.

A year or so ago I stumbled across this fantastic series (pun intended). Often termed urban fantasy romance or just romance, The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning is one of the most complicated science fiction universes that I have ever read. Which is saying ... something, as I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy series. (*spoiler alert*- I talk about the entire series in some detail but not the important things from Shadowfever) The series begins when MacKayla finds out her sister dies while doing a semester abroad in Ireland. The entire five books describe Mac's journey to discover who killed her sister and why. What enthralled me from the beginning was Moning's ability to bring this blond southern belle character from a sun shine sun tanner to a conniving grungy fighter who destroys shades in the shadows surrounded by the husks of dead humans who now look like pieces of paper. Moning explained how the series came to her in a dream, that she had no control over the story line and was just putting pen to paper. I was fascinated by this, as I am by all things dream related. Finally the day came when I could read the latest installment, Shadowfever. What a ride this story has been. Full of twists and turns that I did not see coming. It is also full of Mac's musings, one paragraph caught my eye. "The real thinkers of the world aren't the best dressed. Staying on top of the latest fashions, accessorizing, and presenting oneself is time consuming. It takes a lot of effort, energy, and concentration to be incessantly happy and perfectly groomed. You meet somebody like that- ask yourself what they're running from." In this series we have learned what Mac is running from, but in Shadowfever we learn what Barrons is running from, what secrets the fae keep, what Dani is hiding. It all comes together in a great swoop of previously tugged story lines and Moning twist them together in an unbelievably awesome tapestry of love, friendship, fight, horror, and triumph to make finish this fabulous story.

this is a book i received as a gift without knowing much of anything about it. it ended up being a well-written story of the struggle of a young man who's trying to get his life together despite having to care for his younger brother and relying only on himself. his story will make you laugh, cry, and re-evaluate your own personal struggles.

What an enjoyable read. It grabbed me from the beginning. Ms. Steinbach writes in a breezy style; she does not burden you with too much detail. She takes a leave of absence from her job as a columnist at the Baltimore Sun to spend almost a year in Europe by herself. This is her story. Enjoy!

This book is on my top five favorite books ever. The way the story unfolds from different characters perspectives is so unique. This is a wonderful story about a family's struggle and young girl's struggle to be noticed not taken for granted. This book had me laughing and crying at the same time. I just can not get over how much I enjoy reading Jodi Picoult's writing, it is perfectly describtive and the plot's she comes up with are unlike anything else. Just read this book!
