Back when it first came out, this was my least favorite book, probably because it was so angry. But as the series developed, and as I look back upon the series now as a whole, Harry needed that. He needed that transition to anger, because it helped him realize the weight that Voldemort has placed on his shoulders and he needs to vanquish that weight. Excellent.

Eh. Too much back and forth between characters diminished the drama for me in spots. I still liked it though. After reading two books by this author, I think it's safe to assume one can count on a great ending! However, the first book just didn't carryover well into this book. He should have changed the characters names and made it a completely different book than the first.

A cute book that hits all the right notes. Perfect for fans of Ally Carter and Meg Cabot.

I put off reading this book for some time. When I read on Goodreads that Ms King was writing a new Russell/Holmes book, I was thrilled. Ecstatic. But for some reason, I hesitated to pick up the book. Perhaps it was the length of the book? I think not. Lengthy tomes have never daunted me before. I think that it was more the fact that it had been some time since Ms King had written a book about Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes. I know I am not alone in the fact of being disappointed before while reading sequels upon sequels to beloved books. I didn’t want to become bored with this series. I have a special place in my heart for Mary Russell… Russell and Holmes have been abroad for several months. Mary couldn’t wait to get home to Sussex and to her studies. And Mrs. Hudson’s cooking. But their arrival wasn’t quite as tranquil and welcoming as they could want it. Mrs. Hudson was away, and her assistant, Lulu, told them of a visitor. This visitor turned out to be Damian Adler. They get caught up in a case filled with danger, intrigue, weird religious cults, artists, Bohemia, and sacrificial rights. So, basically, just an average case for the Russell/Holmes team. But not quite, for Damian Adler, the man who comes to Holmes for help to find his missing wife and child…Damian Adler is Sherlock Holmes son. Like I said, I really didn’t want to read this book. I was afraid of not liking it. However, I couldn’t put it down! I loved every minute of it, my favorites being, I suppose, when Mary is actually alone, and Holmes and Damian are off searching on their own, or when Mary is going over the livestock death list in Mycroft’s flat. In past books, it always seemed to drag when Mary and Holmes were apart. But in this one, I actually rather enjoyed it. Perhaps it’s because Mary has grown up quite a bit. So have I. I can’t wait for the next installment…that ‘To be continued’ at the end made me want to break into song…for it means that I get to enjoy another of Ms Kings delightful books.

Scrolling through my shelves, I realized I never posted a review for this book after I read it. Maybe it's because I've been rereading parts of this lately, but I felt this tug to write something, perhaps anything, to articulate why I still feel a connection to this story so long after reading it for the first time. Margo's odyssey down the Stark River feels simultaneously mythical and all too real. Perhaps because lately heroines seem to only exist in futuristic or dystopian landscapes, Margo's tale of survival in spite of rural Michigan's natural and human dangers feels all the more triumphant. Campbell's writing echoes the river in her story, providing strong undercurrents that pull you along without you even realizing where you're going until you're already there. All of her work (including her excellent short story collection American Salvage) depicts rural America so vividly that even I, a complete city girl, can feel a connection and empathy with those that live there, their traditions, and their way of life. This is one of those books that stays with you.

"Eat the cake anime!" This is one of the funniest quotes from the book I, Tina. I, Tina is one of the few books I have read in my spare time out of boredom. Surprisingly, I enjoyed this book so much that I then went out my way to see the movie. The movie was just as amazing as the book itself. The fact that this book was non-fiction, made me enjoy it because I only like fictional books to a certain extent. The humor and sorrow played out well in I, Tina because it made me think and at the same time, I could relate to it. One more thing that I loved about the book was how it ended. Being that I, Tina is somewhat of a biography on Tina Turner’s life, you should automatically know that this book is non-fiction. I love when I am able to relate to a book and that is exactly why I enjoyed this book. Tina included real characters and real events in the book, which made it very interesting and hard to put down. One part of the book that amazed me was when Tina spoke about the birth of her child and how Ike snuck her and the baby out of the hospital, knowing that Tina had a low blood count. He did this just so Tina could continue to sing, he didn’t care about her health. Tons of feeling and emotion was put into the book because you can feel it through writing. Although I, Tina is a serious it is very humorous. I, Tina has very sad parts but I thought they were hilarious. The book has tons of emotional chapters it makes me feel like i was in Tina Turner's shoes but even though is heavily emotional it makes me laugh. A funny part of the book was when Ike Turner made Tina eat the cake. It was funny but sad at the same time because it wasn't funny to Tina. In conclusion, the story of her flight from Ike with thirty-six cents to her name; the subsequent lawsuits for breach of contract and her comeback to fame and fortune that topped anything she had known when she was part of Ike-and-Tina-Turner is well known enough not to have to recount here; but most of this book is a fascinating and well-written exploration of her childhood, her rise to fame, and the hell of her marriage with Ike, told by many different voices besides hers and Ike's that were witness to it all. We listen to Tina's own voice: "I gave in to myself. I went inside of me to help me. You can do it." We look at Tina now, heading for seventy and still drop-dead gorgeous, and we feel a deep admiration and respect for a very magnificent lady. This book is inspired reading.

I only liked the first half, and couldn't read the second.

This book was not as creepy as I expected, given the nature of the dystopian society. (The society is just as creepy in many ways as I expected.) That being said, the fact is that the book contains alot of sexual themes - a given if you read the summary. There is fear of growing up; there is also sexual violence portrayed (but not overly graphicly or on the main character, primarily). The truth is I was kind of fed up with dystopian sci-fi before "The Hunger Games" series made it a hot genre, and now overwritten - much like "Twilight" did for supernatural romances. There's just SO many other aspects of sci-fi as a genre that I'd like to see written about! That being said, I just don't see this kind of world - even in 150 years or so - as plausable. So it makes it harder to swallow the story if you can't totally buy the premise. Despite that, the main character is well drawn, with realistic reactions, concerns, and relationships. She's a fully real person, even if some of her friends seem slightly flatter. The book does have plenty of drama and excitement to keep the story moving; however, the ending is abrupt. I think this book will be enjoyed by fans of dystopian sci-fi and will be appealing to reluctant readers becuase of the focus on teen sexuality. I would not want to recommend this to someone under the age of 16 though.

I'm glad I read it. I can't say it will be a favorite of mine, but I do understand why it is considered a classic. Melville does a great job with descriptions especially in a world that I am highly unfamiliar with. He isn't overly poetic and yet there are moments of it thrown in. The characters a diverse, with a sense of commonality to them based on this whaling expedition and life. It is as if they are all their own people and yet will never truly be an individual in the long run.
