"It was an unhappy truth...that nearly all people in the world behave badly when there is something really big at take". --Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator This book actually exceeded my expectations. In my thinking, it is almost certainly the most hilarious Roald Dahl book that I have ever read. Especially in the interactions very early on with the U.S. President, I was laughing out loud big-time, and very frequently, a first for me with Roald Dahl Stories. The humor is one of this book's strengths; the other is the same common sense rationale set forth through Willy Wonka in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", that all the information necessary not to crash and burn would be concisely provided, but it would be up to the people to hear it for themselves and make it work. If they didn't listen to Wonka, then there would be definite consequences; the exact consequences, in fact, that he had spelled out so clearly. Willy Wonka would always be willing to warn them of unknown pitfalls, but ultimately he could not save them from themselves if they were not willing to listen. A good lesson, and a good story.

I wish there was more...I thoroughly enjoyed the writing in the book, thought-provoking descriptions and encounters. I learned so much about the time period. The author's research must have been incredible. Mary was an incredible woman and character. She made for a wonderful book.

I had looked over and passed over this book many, many times and finally cracked it open....and....couldn't put it down. The story of a missionary family in the Congo is fascinating as told alternately through the voices of the wife and 4 daughters of a southern Baptist minister. The characters are so vivid that I found myself gritting my teeth in frustration through some chapters and mentally cheering and nodding agreement in others. While the work is "fiction" the depth of the story, historical references and biblical anecdotes make the Poisonwood Bible authentic and full of impact. It got me thinking a lot about U.S. politics and priorities as well as my own spiritual beliefs and ideas of family.

...I have absolutely no idea what the point of this book was. It's a whole bunch of machinations, bed hopping, and psychological manipulation with no emotion powering it at all; I spent twenty minutes after having finished it trying to talk myself into having a reaction, any reaction, toward it. At the end of things I just went and had a bowl of cereal. That, and I'm one of those people who loves so hard (and, I will admit, unhealthily) that, when confronted in real life with people who cheat on their partners, I am pretty much always filled with complete disgust and the mindless desire to slap said cheaters silly. The last thing I want is a whole book filled with remorseless, nigh-sociopathic adulterers, which I should have considered when picking it up off the donations shelf. I suppose I should be glad, if only for the sake of my sanity, that the utter dullness of this left no opportunity for it to fill me with rage.

I remember being pretty keen on this book when I first read it. There's been a lot of Fantasy Water under the Literary Bridge however, so I'm pretty eager to see how it holds up to the test of time. I remember this being very detailed, and nicely microcosmic, as opposed to "Oh Noes! We's gotta saves the world again! ZOMG!!1!one!" Which is always a nice change of pace. I also remeber the second book (or second part of this particular book) as being terribly slow, so we'll see if I feel that way again.
