My first Faulkner book! Started off a little rough but about 60 pages in I finally realized it was a comedy. Made the rest of the book much more enjoyable. Gives me encouragement to maybe try another Faulkner one of these days.

A solid read, though a low note to end the trilogy on. I guess the dark & mysterious ending is in keeping with the setting though.

Nearly as perfect as "Me Talk Pretty"--I'll read anything Sedaris writes, and I especially love it when he is on "This American Life"

Slow to start. The last third of the book is a rollercoaster!! It's good to see this part of Rachels life coming to a close, the culmination of character growth and the lack of choices in what Rachel has done to survive is superbly written and makes you wonder just what is going to happen next.. I for one cannot wait for the next installment to see exactly where Miss Harrison takes this series.

Yes, David Foster Wallace was clearly giggling, "I'm soooo witty!" the whole time he was writing this. But I don't care. Jesus, it's really good. Though I'm still not sure I get what happened in the end. Anticonfluentialism forever.

It took a while for me to engage in this one - it's a gentle novel, even though it stars skateboards, adultery, divorce, and family conflict. Our heroine has been coerced into spending the summer with her grandparents. During the summer, she learns how to fold origami cranes. Some of the conflict and feelings seem a bit mature for a 12-year-old, but then I have to remember how old I felt then. Kinda wish the skateboarding and the urban setting was pumped up a bit, with a less girly cover. But I wasn't quite sure in what direction the book was going and the second half went quickly. Also includes interesting depictions of religion - a Buddhist temple is a major player, as is a Christian church. I enjoyed some of the more alternative friendships.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay takes place primarily in New York City during the lead up to WWII, and then through into the 1950s. It's about two cousins who need the other to fulfill what they see as their goals, and self-denial of what they really desire. Oh yeah, they make comics. This book took me forever to read. Everyone said it was great, even people in the subway. It was very good, but there were whole sections of the book that I read with such great trepidation, wondering what sort of disaster Michael Chabon was leading me to. Luckily there was everyone telling me that it was a great book. But it's just not subway fare, I would've liked to spend more solid blocks of time reading it than I did, rather than four or five pages at a time. Then I could have gotten through those tough sections quicker.

I had to read Sula as part of this year's summer reading. It actually was more interesting than I originally imagined, and it wasn't hard to catch some of the imagery and deeper level meaning that was going on in the novel-always a plus when I have to write a paper on it. The characters were well defined, the entire thing was vaguely enjoyable. I'd have liked it more if I wasn't forced to read it.

Annoying humor, trying way too hard, delivered little actual helpful information - in short, a bad choice for one of my first self-help books. At least I got it from the library!
