One too many twists at the end.

This book was gifted to me by the author, and I really wanted to like it. I had a hard time staying interedted, but I did finish the book. I'm not sure if I'll read the other books in this series.

I actually loved this book, unfortunately I read it for an english class and was beaten over the head with symbolism. Poor Fitzgerald, people would LOVE this novel if they weren't forced to analyze every two words during high school.

amy krouse rosenthal writes with the exact same flair and random brilliance as every single one of my friends -- perhaps why this book wasn't as unusual and unique as i expected. though there were some passages i was compelled to read aloud to anyone who'd listen, i mostly had the nagging feeling that i already know amy from somewhere, maybe chicago where i too grew up. she mentions names of people i'm familiar with like greg allen of the neo-futurists, and the whole concept and brevity of the chapters remind me of neo-futurist plays from 'too much light..' things that made me want to write amy: 1. she offers to bake people pies 2. she loves mail, and i love mail, and we mail people need to stick together 3. 'alphabetized' was misspelled as 'aphabetized' early on -- how typos make it to the paperback edition is beyond me. 4. on the page where she talks about q-tips, it says "See also: french fries" and it reads as if she also sticks french fries in her ears. reasons why i probably won't write amy: 1. i actually didn't relate to her in a lot of the book: she was popular, threw parties, was a cheerleader -- later had the luxury of writing in coffee houses constantly and dropping off her dry cleaning, has kids, is married -- is she really like a friend of mine at all? 2. i'd really just be in it for the pie.

Read while I was in Korea, this book was fascinating and helped me understand some of what I was observing.

so many reasons it's kitchy and silly but it's an easy hook. fun read.

This is two interleaved books. Bonanza, book 4, follows the story of Jack Shaftoe who is sold to the Barbary pirates, and Junto, book 5, which follows the story of Eliza to Holland, France, and other places in her quest to make herself financially secure. I really enjoyed this book. More than the first. Not for those who don't enjoy long tangents and it really requires a good basic knowledge of European history as he doesn't slow down to explain much.

A beautifully rendered book reminiscent of Marquez's magic realism. Murakami's hero moves towards his goal through immobility, a detective whose primary weapon is introspection. The intriguingly malleable sense of reality pushes one to question the everyday, even as the plot draws the reader further from mundane concerns and deeper into the world of the novel.

I listened to this as an audio book, which has also brought down the rating. There are many names to keep track of and if you take a reading or listening break, it can be tricky getting back on track. Also, if I listened correctly, some characters had nicknames, which also added to my listening confusion. Otherwise, I thought it was an intriguing tale with interesting twists. Worth a read, but I think it might be better in paper. Or maybe I should have been more focused on my listening!

this is such a great book. first off, the images of douglas' work are massive, powerful and loaded with impact. the majority are collected from the black panther newspaper. plus there are roughly 5 articles about him, his art, and its/his relevance in the community (some of the info overlaps as the articles exist individually). absolutely necessary.
