World War Z is comprehensive and compelling (and scary) -- I loved the oral history format and Brooks's vivid world-building. It was one of those books that I had to pull out of every so often to remind myself that my world is not crawling with Zed. Best zombie book ever!

Yes, these are Young Adult books--but I've never read a story where the protagonist (an eleven year old girl) decides she can completely trust someone because he is a murderer. Pullman evokes more mystery and wonder than C.S. Lewis ever did, and Pullman's moral system is the absolute antithesis of Lewis's.

It might be because I'm not that fond of the subject matter but to me this book was just so boring and badly drawn that I don't see anyone enjoying the read. The cover artwork alone should be enough to scare off possible readers. I'd just pass this one by.

I'm a huge Ian McEwan fan and Black Dogs is my second fav from him. Atonement is still his masterpiece & Amsterdam is the only one I truly didn't care for. Black Dogs is about many things: family,friends, memories, and regret. I love the language McEwan uses to describe simple things. It sets him apart from other male writers. Women are considered to be more descriptive but McEwan gives them a run for their money. Black Dogs is more optimistic than Atonement which was a complete downer. I'm looking forward to reading his other novels that I haven't gotten to yet.

Another on my Best of 2008 list and a book club pick as well. I don't know if it was because I'd worked for an advertising agency that I felt such an affinity for these bizarre people, but I loved them all--even the crazy guy with the chair (don't want to give too much away).
