The series agenda is finally made known. This volume is okay. I'm listening to "Max" now and I already like it better. Jax has finished them all and is waiting on Angel from the library. I better hurry :D

Simply, Secret Son is passionate and exciting. The reader drops into Lalami's Morocco and begins to recognize the the city and the people. It becomes home a home within words. The plot constantly pushes forward and the characters are compelling and complex. It's hard to finish because you want it to keep going.

This novel holds one of my favorite sentences of all time, and many of my favorite characters. No one should leave the earth without reading this.

Trying to catch up on Shakespeare that I haven't read, I went through J.C. pretty quickly. It isn't as good as some of the other tragedies, but was enjoyable for the first 3 and a half acts. After that nothing much happens except boring battle scenes and pointless suicides. Up next I either want to read some of the history plays I've never gotten around to, like Henry the Whatever-th, or jump over and read some Marlowe since I never have.

1984 Batchelder Award Winner This is a wonderful story about Ronia, the daughter of fierce robber Matt, who spends her time living like a wild child in the beautiful woods near Matt's Fort. When she was born, Matt's Fort was split in two by lightning, creating Hell's Gap in between the two sides. Later Matt's rival robber Borka and his crew take up residence in the other side of the fort and rename it Borka's Keep. When Ronia meets Borka's son Birk, they save each others' lives and become fast friends, but this poses problems for their warring robber clans. Woven into the story are magical Scandinavian-esque creatures that live in the forest and make life difficult for humans--harpies (I guess they're more Greek(?)), gray dwarves, rumphobs, murk trolls, and the terrible Unearthly Ones who try to call people down to the Underworld with their mysterious song. I loved this book--it was perfectly paced and all of the characters felt real. It shines with a loving friendship that is almost certain to one day lead to romance, and the heartache of a stubborn father learning to accept his headstrong daughter even when he doesn't agree with her choices. Incidentally, the Swedish-made 1984 movie of this book is on YouTube in 12 parts--it's a little cheesy and I can't understand a word they're saying, but it might be kind of fun to watch.

What a great listen. Typically, audiobooks are read by one person, but this had three wonderful readers who really nailed the southern accents. Plus, it was long, which is the best type of audiobook.

Three and a half stars. Three stars for the content, which was disturbing and sometimes dallied too long in the awfulness without enough retrospective, adult Margaux analysis, but four stars for the quality of her prose. I wish she had spent more of the story in her teenaged years, as her awakening into adulthood and agency in her own life was more important to me than the gritty details of the victimization of her childhood. This was a troubling book that I considered abandoning at times, more so because of the emotional and psychological abuse she suffered than the sexual abuse (which is not to discredit the latter in any way). I'm taking it back to Half-Price rather than keeping it on my shelf, but I'm glad to have read it.

Fascinating and entertaining. I'm just a little too much like this person at certain point. Reminded me a lot of David Shields which is exactly what I want.

I vacillated between three and four stars here (I love how I agonize over this damn star system) because some of the dialogue felt a little contrite to me, and some of the scenes felt weirdly retro. But the emotions here were so amazingly true to life, including some complicated, messy stuff that isn't always addressed in books, that I had to up it to four. So there you go!
