Working is the kind of book that could occupy a place of honor on the back of my toilet for decades. That's the highest of compliments.

Five stars for the story and the encouragement it provided. The writing is quite simplistic, though. That a four-year-old had this kind of supernatural experience is sort-of hard to believe on the outset. But as I read, my heart warmed to his accounts of meeting Jesus and seeing heaven. His father, the author, uses scriptural references to explain and validate his desciptions. I was greatly encouraged by this family's story. However, the account of Colton's illness and experience in the hospital is really hard to read for a parent. Made me anxious. I wanted to fly through that part of the book. A quick and easy read that's worth it overall!

Inspector Morse takes on the case of a young woman found raped and murdered in a pub parking lot. The list of suspects gets longer as Morse and Sergeant Lewis, working together for the first time, discover that the victim was far from innocent. This is the first of the Inspector Morse series, and the second that I've read (The Dead of Jericho a few months ago). The mystery here is done really well and is hard to figure out. The cons:the romance between Morse and a suspect's roommate is sudden and melodramatic, and the attitude towards rape victims is so outdated that it's jarring and reminds the reader that this was written in 1975. If it weren't for those flaws, this would read like a modern book set in those pre-DNA days. I enjoyed it.

I am giving this book 5 stars because it exceeded my expectations for a historical mystery thriller from an author I had never heard of. The characters really came alive for me, and although it would not be considered one of the greatest books of all time, it was thoroughly entertaining and well-paced.

Christopher Hitchens will tell the truth about his opinions; no matter what the outcome. I found this book to be a scathing expose of the lack of goodness displayed by the God of the Bible. Hitchen's caustic wit shines throughout the pages of the book which will be hard for most believers to endure without rushing to God's defense. The logic is unarguable though and the defenders will find themselves in an impossible to win situation. I did not read this until after I realized that God was mere superstition.

I can't really say I loved this book, but it definitely made an impression on me. A friend of mine lent it to me, and she was REALLY into those goth comic book characters like Sandman. I don't think I've ever read anything like it--it's very rich in comic-book fantasy, but also, feels vaguely blasphemous. If that makes sense.

Possibly the only first-person account of the life of a child soldier, this is a moving and yet hope-filled book. The first section captures the life of young refugees, fleeing from the violence of a civil war, and the distrust adults have ofeand his friends since the use of child soldiers has taught people that children can be deadly. Beah's descriptions of violence are deceptively matter of fact, so that one reads them with a muted sense of horror and pity that comes back once the book is closed to consider how easily children can be turned to murder and mayhem. And yet, Beah and some of his friends are rescued from the war, and Beah succeeds in fleeing from the war when it finds him again, after rehabilitation and a kind of return to normalcy. His story is the reality of life for many many children caught up in conflicts around the world, and it should be required reading for every adult who reads. We must stop the killing for the sake of the young and for our own sake.

From the Publisher This "fascinating...superbly written" memoir Boston Globe tells the story of James McBride and his mother-a rabbi's daughter, born in Poland and raised in the South, who fled to Harlem, married a black man, founded a church, and put twelve children through college. Lavishly praised by critics, and embraced by millions of readers, this tribute to a remarkable woman is an eloquent exploration of what family really means.
