** spoiler alert ** This book continually pressed itself upon my life and thoughts throughout the brief period that I was reading it, making me sad. I think that counts as a ringing endorsement from me. I did feel like the very end was a bit much, too different of a tone from the rest of the novel, and subsequently some portion of my enjoyment unraveled, sparking me to retroactively find flaws and disappointments in it. Just as I had predicted throughout, despite the hint toward a better future, there was just no way for any coming through to the other side to make up for the depressing fact of Peter Paddington's mother's life, or for any of the other intractably tragic situations of other people in the novel, or anywhere.

I love WLs storytelling style! The Hour was a little tough at times because of the characters' names (Lilly, Lydia, Lolly, Liza all in the same family!) and there is a point at which you wonder 'what else is going to happen to this guy' the protagonist.
