I listened to this book on a long drive across Oregon to Wyoming. While the topic is grim, the descriptions are so good you easily immerse yourself in the world Orwell describes. Knowing that this life was real for so many people, including, for a time, Orwell, makes it all the more engaging.

Its unusual but I actually had the sequel ordered from the library and it came in too so I read them together in one weekend. This was an immediate follow on from the previous book and tied up the loose ends by the end. Bit of a surprise at the end too.

I just finished this massive book and I debated 2 stars vs 3 stars. I wouldn't really say I didn't like the book, parts of it were very captivating and it was all beautifully written. Like his last book I read, though, it fell apart at the end. However, this one fell apart for about 300 pages, which was grueling at times. It just never ended, in fact, I would say that it didn't end-- it just stopped.

This book is so beautifully written. The imagery and depth to his sentences are absolutely amazing. At times he went off onto tangents or went into too much detail, but it was still a very interesting story. With Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee still fresh in my mind, it was very interesting to hear a more personalized take on that subject and place in time. The story wasn't as riveting as Cold Mountain, but dang, can the man write!

I really enjoyed this story. Isabelle works so hard to be different than her parents, only to end up being just like them. It seems like the way it goes. Amy is a young teenager trying to fit in and willing to get attention anywhere she can, Isabelle is a young mother trying to be something she is not and live a lie. The two end up alienating each other trying to be something they are not.

To date the most overrated work of 20th century analytic thought (if one wishes to truly count the later Wittgenstein as an analytic). Written in a fragmentary styled not seen in the traditional philosophical corpus since Spinoza, Wittgenstein often leaves the reader guessing at what he could possibly be referencing. The work starts out quite strong as a critique of Russell and Moore, concerning their conceptions of language and its logic. But as the work progresses, many philosophers mistakenly take the hermeneutical gap between author and reader to be a sign of Wittgenstein's genius; instead of the proper and simpler idea that Wittgenstein himself is working with a fragmentary mind. Indeed, the fragmentary style allows many different thinkers to draw quite disparate conclusions from the same passages. I suspect the real reason everyone loves Wittgenstein is they love that he provides a means by which to buttress one's own theoretical predispositions.

Since I grew up going to Chicago on a regular basis, I was very intriged by this book. When I started this book, I thought that many of the buildings remained from the World's Fair, such as The Art Institute, The Field Museum, etc, but I was wrong. Turns out only one building remains, and it had to be rebuilt to be a permament building, since the buildings for the fair were built so quickly. I don't think this book is limited to those who are familiar with Chicago. The planning process by the architects, how they accomplished this with the resources of the day, and the fair's lasting impact makes it a great read. I won't give it all away, but here's a tid-bit of the fair's lasting legacy: Walt Disney's father attended the fair and would recall wonderful memories of the fair to him, inculding the park-like settings and the villages reconstruced from around the world. So, while the majority of the book is about the architects and the fair, there is another story weaved through: that of a serial killer and con-man (one person) who sets up a hotel near the fair, where young women tend to not check out after checking in. Interesting sob-plot, to say the least. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and had a hard time putting it down.

** spoiler alert ** Jesus invades the life of the Inquisitor. He doesn't want Jesus to change anything and to die another humiliating death in front of the people. All this so that the Inquisitor could keep his power.
