Loud Raspberries for Johanna Skibsrud´s The Sentimentalists, winner of this year´s Giller Prize. (1) The Giller prize award for Canadian literary excellence has been given this year at best for quirky reasons be it the author’s unusual name, the boutique printing press - Gaspereau printing it or the fact that the committee consists of, believe it, just three people with their faddist tastes - Well, they have succeeded in at least scaring me away from any of their future recommendations. (2) The book which purports itself to be a novel is more of a Lit Essay of 5K words with none of the sweep and depth to help us to understand the human condition from a different perspective and present revelatory insights that one would expect of a novel for which I wag my finger at the Giller committee - why reward such an anorexic work of such shallow content? (3) The book relates the odyssey of Napoleon, a troubled Vietnam vet, who seems to be shuffling with his daughters from N.D. to Ontario with side trips to the Maine coast while trying to come terms with his trauma during a Vietnam massacre in which unarmed village women were killed; while at the same time trying to establish baseline communication with his daughters. The shimmering abstraction of recollection as well as the shifting nature of relationships intersecting with reality needs space to be developed which this slight tome at best gives a brief sketch: It should be either be presented as a crystalline poem or a long development. The book fails in being neither. Give me the delicious ambiguities that sew well chosen words of Sebald’s or Kapuscinski´s books elicit or the shimmering text of well and patiently crafted novels by Arundhati Roy or the full-spectrum noisy suburban dystopia of Franzen´s books shout out. The only positive thing about this soi-disant book/essay is that one hits the back cover in one 2 hour sitting leaving you mystified by its traceless neutral transparence. A big disappointment! Shame, Giller Committee - Canada deserves better! 11-01-01-Yaoundé-10JanXI
