Milla Lintilä mmlintila — I usually adore a book if it succeeds in making me cry. The Book Thief is one of those books that ensures you spend the whole night weeping into the pages. I’ve read the book about four times since I picked it up when I was thirteen years old and it’s one of the most special books I’ve found. There’s no one explanation as to what the book is about. It’s narrated by Death, and it’s about a young girl called Liesel who lives with her foster parents in Germany during the war. That’s the briefest of the brief outlines of the book. It’s about Liesel and her relationships with poor, starving Germans on her street, her foster parents, the Jew her family hides in the basement, but most of all, it’s about her love for books. I can hardly explain what it’s about so I urge you to go pick it up as soon as you can. It’s magical, really. It’s going to leave you as a melted puddle of goo. It hurt my heart to read it because the novel was so beautifully written and the characters so well-woven. I think it’s an important book for people of all age to read because it’s all about… being human, and about how war can bring out the worst- and the best- in people. It’s about love, friendship, acceptance, alienation, books, family, forgiveness, secrets, promises. I could go on and on but that wouldn’t do the book any justice. It’s a flawless book to me.

Mara Uboldi muboldib520 — This book was....ok. It was thought provoking- the "case" studies...stories...were interesting and even as a mental health professional myself I gleaned some useful info. However, for the day to day reader I feel the author would have one believe that no one is safe from sociopathy. I'm not sure the situation is that dire....

Luccas Design luccasdesign — 3.5 stars, rounded down to 3 for GR because if I hadn't been reading this for two challenges, I would have put it down in the first 15% or so. I had higher hopes for this one, having read & enjoyed Ethan Day's books previously, but the first 1/5 or so was all over the place and often seemingly random. (view spoiler) It didn't help that there was no formatting for changes in scene or POV, but the beginning chapters seemed to be a mismash of establishing Cassidy's backstory and character. Once the other MC finally shows up (though I didn't know who it was going to be at the time), the book gets a bit more orderly and enjoyable. I really loved the locale -- a small island of the coast of North Carolina, complete with all the feeling of a small island town where they take care of their own and don't have much truck with mainlanders. The pet aspect was sweet, too -- a little Yorkie that MC #1 rescues from some feral dogs. The dog actually has a role as a secondary character, she's not just window dressing, and I like that a lot. The problems of randomness showed up later in the book, too. I think some tighter editing and cutting maybe 20% would have helped a lot. Overall a decent beach read and great tribute to MC #1's deceased grandmother and the importance of loving family, both blood family and chosen family.

Shannon Bergland _hannon_ilbert — One of my favorites; I read it 2 times in Farsi, and I hope I can have a chance to read it in English at some point.

Jan Fleer janfleer1d02 — I almost didn't finish this one, but somehow I made it through. I'm not sure why, but I was never drawn into the story at all and I felt like something was missing throughout the entire book.

Emay De emdguzman — I have read a few if this series now. They are very similar to the many other teen vampire school novels that exist. One thing that is a bit troubling about this mother/daughter writing team is the jump in writing style between formal and informal writing.. I am assuming mom is more formal but.. ? One very strong part of the book is the ending. Along with the others in the series it has a cliffhanger that makes you want to read the next one. I need to know what happens to Grandma!

Berta Ferrer bblacksmith — the story is gritty and fast paced and utterly captivating (haha, pun intended). there are some gruesome parts, but nothing too terrible (after all, it is YA). interesting characters and i'm eager to see where the next installment goes with the story.
