Andrew Volodin gray_fingers — Not anywhere near as funny as 'Give a Mouse a Cookie'

Joel Merino joelmerino — I thought the book was bizarre and gloomy to read. I kept waiting for it to get to the point. I do appreciate how historically significant his style was and how Anderson influenced Steinbeck in his common man characters. He wrote about what they are thinking, not what they're saying.

Tomasz Siepsiak chileanempire — Yet another wonderful read from Catherynne Valente, this time the first volume of a trilogy dedicated to the mythical Prester John, fabled king of the three Indies. Once more Valente recounts the story through the words of many characters: John, the befuddled but not so innocent priest; Hagia, the blemmye and his future wife; Imtithal, the panoti, who told tales to three children in a distant past; and brother Hiob who, centuries later, will transcribe these stories from books borne from a tree. It is with them that we learn of the land and people of Pentexore, of their discovery of immortality, and how to survive in the land of eternal life. It is with them that we learn of lies and broken truths, of deceit in a land that knew none, and the lengths a man will go for his faith.

Diana Mitchell dianamitchell — I am going to write a placeholder review for all of Robert Sampson's books because I plan to reread them soon. Hands down, the best writer/historian the pulps ever had! Why? Because he loves the pulps but he's not "in love" with them - he can show you why they were great, why they were awful, why they were brilliant, why they were cheap, how they were poetic and how they were trash, and do it all while informing you AND placing the whole shebang in it's cultural context AND entertaining you. An amazing writer, I believe I need one more book by him to have everything he ever wrote on the subject (that's been printed in book form, at least) - you may not ever need to actually read many pulp stories and now you don't have to - Robert Sampson has and can condense their weird wonder down into this strange, printed form of a magic elixir (a mixed metaphor!?! why, that would have made me 2/3rds of a cent if I was a bang-em out, hack pulp writer!) Seriously, these are some stunning books and well worth your time if you have any interest in the topic of the pulps and dime novels and genre history.
