Ana Sol _na_oldela_lave — I read the back cover first. Bad move. It does a horrible job of capturing the story. The book itself is good. The story builds at a good pace, explains the African culture in an easily understandable way, and really engages you. As I said, the book is good. But the ending is amazing. Incredibly poignant.

Shruit Verma shruti261993 — The most enjoyable element of this book is the savvy meta-fiction fun you get from the veiled references to the Narnia and Harry Potter books. The author does a really wonderful job of capturing some of the most enchanting elements of those series and then quickly turning the conventions on their heads, usually connecting them to just how sullen and unreasonable an unhappy teenager can be. I was sure this was going to be a 5 star book in the first half, but ended up being a tad disappointed that the early promise wasn't entirely fulfilled -- fundamentally, i think its because the main protagonist just isn't likeable enough. Highly recommended for anyone who likes to get snarky about Harry Potter on occasion or for literary criticism english majors. Recommended for anyone else!

Andy Ceng zenghui — The first part of the book is hard to follow as it is: 1) Germans invade Rome and set up their pope 2) Germans go home because the summer is too hot 3) Romans revolt and set up their own pope 4) Germans invade again Repeat until Renaissance. Once you get past that, the rest of the book is quite interesting, and as usual, the villains are much more interesting than the saints, especially the Borgias. The recent history with Pius XII and WWII, Vatican II, the alleged murder of John Paul I, the fact that John Paul II created more saints than all the other popes combined, and the tenuous start to Benedict XVI make for fascinating reading at the end.
