Yongqiang Gu snest — this collection of essays, recipes, stories, old sketches of new orleans, email correspondence, quotes from famous new orleanians, and a little lagniappe is overall good but some sections are definitely stronger than others. overall, "the dirge," which is specifically about katrina and her aftermath, is stronger than the following section, "the return." however, i think "the return" is important, because some of the stories capture the unique essence of new orleans, and it's important not to lose sight of this as we rebuild. and the lagniappe, of course, is delicious.

Paula Weichandt wpau — obviously, we all knew who she was going to choose, so no surprise ending there. what i dislike about this book is the LACK of passion. yes, we know they had sex but it was hard to FEEL the passion. the ending was beyond BORING (i think i've seen the movie 8 times, so why put it in a book). overall, the book lackluster. it might have been better without email and without the 'other guy' (or main guy, depending on how you look at it) being the ex-husband. i mean, who the hell was buying that! it would've been better with the sexy bullfighter! ugh. the main character seems shallow as hell, and so does this book. but i have get three stars because there were some funny moments, and i like to laugh, and because it kept me in enough suspense that i HAD to see the ending for myself, though i already knew how it would end. basically, i finished and i laughed, so that's 3 stars' worth.

Moo Guer mooguer — Beautful and frightening. I found myself near tears as the story went on but strangely ok at the end. How scary to know you are headed down the path to dementia but somehow a contentment with self at the finality of it.
