Dung Tran michelletran — When I first read this book, I hated it with an unreserved fiery passion befitting its main characters. I awarded it two stars because I was reluctant to give one star to a Great Work of English Literature. But really, I meant one star. It's been about five years now, and I was excited to re-read it for my book club to see if my feelings have changed at all. So far as the 'love story' goes, they haven't changed one bit. I loathe Heathcliff and Cathy. There is nothing romantic about their love; it is sick and delusional, the product of emotionally unstable characters, one a narcissist, one a sociopath. There is still nothing romantic to me about a love that does nothing but destroy. Oddly enough, because I knew that I hated these characters and did not care about their happiness or believe in their love, I was able to enjoy the story quite a bit more. Recasting Heathcliff as the villain and reading the book as a warning against the dangers of obsessive, all-consuming love, I found myself quite enjoying it by the end. That is likely not what Ms. Bronte was going for, but so it goes. I remain a Jane Eyre girl at heart.
