Mike Mueller _ike_ueller — This is such a fun read! There was more depth and energy in this book than I expected based on the cover. I was impressed with how the author was able to write this in such a casual and appealing way, yet still weave a great story line. Plus, I have absolutely adopted her use of sketches in the margin with my students. Great read - especially for young boys!

Margaux Rosset margauxdiary — This book is phenomenal. It is an allegory, and is full of plot twists, dramatic scenes, quirky weirdness, great dialogue and superb writing. Chesterton is able to turn a phrase like no one else I've ever read, and do it consistently throughout the book. The scenes he paints with his words are gorgeous, and overflowing with simple awesomeness. It is also very hilarious while still making you think. A great book, but I did have some problems reading it. Not having known it was an allegory beforehand would have helped tremendously. The characters do not necessarily act in the most natural way at times, but once I figured out what Chesterton was doing it made a lot more sense and was much easier to enjoy. The characters are in perfect harmony with what they represent, but I felt it was a little uneven with regards realistic characterization. This may also be because the book is over a hundred years old, and culturally things are different. The only other complaint I have about this book is that the twists were genius, then predictable, then genius again. The book is full of plot twists and reveals, and about a third of the way through the book I was able to predict the next few twists. The book was still a thrill to read, but had lost some of its flavor by following the same pattern. Again, once I saw that this was allegory it made more sense; also, with about the 5th character reveal I understood that Chesterton was not playing this twists to say "Aha! Gotcha!", but was doing so to show a bigger point about the theme of goodness he was delving into. Once that happened I started to love the book even more. Of course, then the twists get quite ridiculous (but still work) and I was utterly unable to predict some of them. Again, if you know this book is an allegory, and you're familiar with Christianity, the themes are pretty easy to spot. Then as you read on you realize you have no idea what is happening, and by the end are quite confused. I knew I'd just read an awesome story, and thought I had some of it figured out, but the more I thought about it the more I realized I didn't know. Definitely would be worth a reread.
