Tai Le mtailec91e — Astounding. As most 19th C literature, takes a bit to ease into, but worth the effort. A surprisingly bawdy love story for its time. I suspect a second read would be beneficial - there seems to be a good amount of satire that I missed due to the subtlety of the time period. Said to be the best example of the transition between romanticism to realism.

Daria Grekoff 024_ — 4.25 stars! A pleasant surprise. When I first started to read this book and discovered it was a murder mystery, I almost set it down. You see, I'm not really fond of murder mysteries. I'm so glad I pursued the story though. The solving of the murder is secondary or possibly even third to the real story: the subtle nuances and dance of the Saudi culture regarding men and women. I've read many novels from the woman's point of view but this is the first that also explores a man's perceptions of this culture. If you enjoy exploring other cultures this is the book for you. I was mesmerized by Derraris' writing, descriptions, and portrayals of religious etiquette (not that I could survive the culture, mind you but now understand it a little more). Bravo! I will read another by this author!

Eason Mok a10193054017519 — Overall I was disappointed with this book. It had such a promising start with characters that seemed so new and original but then it fell into a familiar depressing mold. David and Norah's story seemed to take a sharp turn into the over done and tired while Caroline's became something of a cake walk where pretty much everything she wanted happened and there were absolutely no obstacles in her way. I found the ending the most disappointing though - Norah and Paul's "shock" at finding Phoebe alive was almost laughable. It would have been nice to see a story where Norah and Paul did not follow the norm and become guilt and grief ridden individuals like they should have and where Caroline did end up with everything she wanted just for doing the right thing. It made for a very predictable story. Also I found a striking similarity to theme of The Lovely Bones in here.
