Due to family histories and professional exposure to different people who purportedly share some of these diagnoses, this is very interesting topic to me. The introduction is very lucidly written--my understanding of bi-polar disorder increased somewhat, but the quality of the writing goes down as the book proceeds. Mostly because he starts hitting you over the head with the parts of the thesis he had already proved, and doesn't state it in a new way or add much new information. The book was also interesting vis-a-vis some apparently opposing parties have met in litigation. The historical tidbits about the different leaders which I did not know kept me going in the book, and are of some interest. As some reviews point out, correlation is not causation. Sure, many bi-polar or hyperthymnic people are bright, and their brain chemistry made them the leaders they were, but just because they succeeded in certain instances, and certain "homoclite," or mentally normal, or "conventional" leaders failed, does not necessarily mean that all would.

I liked this book, all about the trials and tribulations of a master mason (I know, doesn't sound that good, does it?) The book spans many years in the 1100's which offers a nice historical perspective. However, it was just too long. I breezed through the final 50 pages just to be done with it. I think it would have been a much better read had things been abridged somewhat. Still, overall, I'm glad I read it.

Breathless... that's what I am, after reading Magenta Shaman. And, it's not because I literally 'tore' through the story. Once I started reading, I could NOT put this down! I don't have a Kindle yet, so I download to the Kindle for PC app. I was reading this on my desktop computer the other night, and if the power had chosen that particular time to go out... my 'cries' would have been heard all the way to Eastbourne! (I live on the West Coast of the United States.) Urban fantasy/horror is a genre I have not read a lot of, especially the last several years. Not because I lost interest... but, because I found new interests. After reading Magenta Shaman, I am asking myself what was so bloody important to leave behind stories like this! Lily's dark tale... you were right, Lily. It IS a love story... leaves a delicious 'taste', and a hunger for more! What absolutely wonderful, dark imagery her words conjure... I can almost feel the Billowat's fetid, rotting breath on me. From the opening paragraph, my heart rate doubled... if I had been reading a paper book version, I would have left sweaty fingerprints throughout. Oh... I was right about one thing, Lily. Even with a night light, I tossed and turned all night! Somehow... "Thank you" seems a bit inadequate!

My stepmother gave me this book to read. I took it with a bit of hesitation -- she can get very new-agey at times, too much for my atheist blood -- but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and dove in. I'm about 2/3 of the way through (just about to leave Indian for Indonesia) and it's been amazing. I've found myself (very uncharacteristically) reaching for a pencil to underline a particularly inspiring phrase, paragraph, whatever. (The "spiritual" part of the book I feared most -- too much "God", I worried -- but Gilbert makes sure she clarifies in the beginning that she uses "God" for lack of a better term. I have replaced it, in my own mind, as searching for "peace", and am taking so much away from it.)
