At times, Nothing Like the Sun is extraordinarily gripping. During certain scenes, such as WS writing a sonnet at home early in the book or WS witnessing the executions, the brilliance expected from Burgess is on clear display. Unfortunately, much of this book is sorely lacking this brilliance. As a great fan of Burgess, I was a little disappointed with this story, but it was still enjoyable. Looking back, this might be a book that requires a second reading to truly appreciate.

Loved it. Well-deserving of the Newbery. It was amusing, mysterious, and touching all at the same time. I loved the way it was written: a young girl moving back to the town where her father (something of a hobo) had lived as a young man. The story switches back and forth between her story and her father's as she's discovering more about him. All in all, fabulous book. It's one I'm going to buy!

Though I now think on this book fondly, I've had my set of struggles in remembering that it felt too clever, too rube goldberg, too much. It wasn't the narrative--which was beautiful, telling, honest, and deconstructed--but the use of text on the cover and inside pages that tipped me off. Trying too hard. That said, the story is about powerful beauty and family.

Ian McEwan does not write the easiest books to read, and this one was no exception. His main character, Michael Beard, is not exactly likeable, but I didn't dislike him entirely either. He is a complex, interesting character with many flaws. His one outstanding virtue is his intelligence and how he applied it in the field of physics and won the Nobel Prize for Physics. However, instead of building on that Nobel, Beard slides into a life of gluttony, mental laziness, and persistent cheating on whatever wife he is married to at the time. This book veered from interesting, to slightly boring, to interesting again. It was arduous at times due to some of the physics-related passages that I was neither interested in nor could comprehend. This is a character study of man's life and how he lived it, how he wasted several opportunities and took advantage of the wrong ones. This is not a quick read, nor can you skim (except in the more science-heavy passages). McEwan writes with such precision and is such a joy to read that even though this wasn't my favorite of his, and I found Beard to be a repulsive, yet somewhat sympathetic character, I still enjoyed the book. I would recommend reading one of his earlier works, perhaps Atonement first.

Max Barry proves that mass murder in a shopping mall as a publicity stunt really can be funny. This book really tickled my fatalistic/cynical sense of humor. It's just real enough to be wickedly pointed.

I like the themes of Justin Gustainis' books. One of the hardest feats to do as a writer is to make an interesting book that introduces a group of new characters. Black Magic Woman introduces us to Quincy Morris, a well researched Supernatural Hunter. He does not appear to have any special powers or abilities other than a good amount of smarts, toughness and a family history of getting involved in the weird. I like the concept of the regular guy taking on the supernatural a'la Indiana Jones. We are also introduced to Libby, a witch, and Van Drennan a South African cop in the Supernatural Division. Add in a lot of interesting side characters and you get a wild introduction to the series. Fighting witches and demons; the protagonists fights for their client and friends while multiple sides, completely unaware of each other, fight to the death. Great stuff! I am looking forward to the next novel.

I absolutely loved this book, much more than I honestly expected to! Thought it would be informative, and a good background but this was so very personal, went so deep into Thomas' life and it was so interesting - I could not put it down until I finished it. I bought copy for my father and he called me after he started it and commented on how much he loved it too. This is a great read.
