Herriot's third collection of loosely autobiographical tales of veterinary practice in the Yorkshire dales ostensibly takes place while he is serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II. However, most of the chapters only begin with a paragraph or two about his military life which inevitably reminds him of someone or some animal-related event from his past. This was mildly disconcerting as the connections between the RAF event and the story to follow are sometimes quite a stretch. The tales are still quite entertaining and enjoyable, although it becomes slightly more clear that what is being related is becoming a bit more fictionalized than the incidents contained in the first two books of the series.

After surviving reading House of Leaves, it seems that I can't say "no" to a Danielewski book. I remain cautiously optimistic about the book, despite the fact that it seems to be in a... poetry... sort of format, and that it's written from two different viewpoints: one going from the front to the back of the book, and one, upside down, going from the back to the front of the book. Um. We'll see how well this goes.

One of the best books I've ever read. Salinger's laid back writing style really brings out the characters personality and thoughts. Really, that's all the book is: his personality and thoughts. I can pick it up again and again and learn something I'd never noticed before. The use of dark and sarcastic humor keeps me attached to each page.

My first experience with Mailer and I loved it. A spectacular study of violence, dysfunctional relationships, and the psyche that accompanies both. Scarier than most "horror" out there. Highly recommended.

Something tells me this story was originally much longer than it's current length. It just feels very, very edited. Very scraped clean. like all the toppings have been picked off my meat lover's combo leaving only the cheese. And cheese pizza is fine, but that meat lover's combo is divine. I just wanted a little more. It seemed like details came too fast and thin and then we were on to something else. Great, well-executed plot, the pacing was spot on, I just wanted more details, more character development, more setting info. That's all.
