My wife picked this up for me thinking it looked interesting. I first thought it was a kids book. I loved it!!! A great story of a book loving girl's life in Germany during the second world war.

Bit slow at the beginning just like "An Instance of the Fingerpost". But if you like big books with many characters, this one's for you. Plot's rich and intriguing. Also, like someone else already said about DoS, the imagery and the descriptions are beautiful, and that make it up for the slow beginning and for whatever one might not like about Pears' style.

I was worried that this would be a let down but, for the most part, it wasn't. Once I began reading, I could barely put it down, and I was quite satisfied with the fact that J.K. Rowling didn't make it too overly resolved, or too unneccesarily dark. I like the resolution with the exception of the POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING! 'nineteen years later' chapter at the end of the book which, although I ate it up, I still found hokey and unnecessary (and a little bit pandering).

What a sweet, heavy, sorrowful story. Elizabeth McCraken’s baby dies in the ninth month of pregnancy and this is her story rolled out backwards for her readers, from the opening pages when she shares that her precious son dies and a second child is born alive and healthy. Knowing from the start that Elizabeth and her husband will have this second child does nothing to ease the reader through the savage grief of that dreadful day when their child is stillborn. Elizabeth’s words “This is the happiest story in the world with the saddest ending,” says it all.

As I read this first novel by Amy Strychasz, it felt as if the character development seamlessly and progressively unfolded from page to page. Through the use of dialogue and description, Ms. Strychasz effectively unveiled the developing maturity of the main character, Marshall. Moreover, the relationships portrayed were in themselves revelatory, defining more clearly Marshall's search for self-actualization. I loved Marva, who in all her uniqueness, honesty, and soul-searching, gathered uncertainty into vision and direction. Although, for me, the novel began a tad bit slowly, it quickly mushroomed into a non-stop read over the course of a few hours. And of course, its many references to Buffalo, were an added bonus! A great read for a book club!

I have a number of them mounted and framed. I've even talked with Christi about purchasing an original, but no luck so far.
